Length does not determine fuel consumption
Two yachts of similar length can have radically different fuel requirements. A fast planing motor yacht, a displacement-oriented vessel, a sailing yacht and a catamaran operate according to different hydrodynamic and propulsion principles. Comparing them using a single litres-per-hour assumption would therefore be misleading.
Speed has a major effect
For powered yachts, fuel consumption can change substantially with speed. Maximum-speed figures are useful for understanding performance capability but are not a reliable proxy for normal cruising economy. Owners should ask for consumption information at realistic cruising speeds and in the loading condition in which the yacht will normally operate.
Tank capacity is not the same as range
A large fuel tank can support greater endurance, but usable range depends on consumption, reserve policy, weather, sea state and operating speed. Published range figures should be understood together with the conditions and speed at which the builder calculated them. Owners should not plan a passage by multiplying tank capacity by an assumed economy figure without appropriate margins.
Hull form and propulsion
Displacement, semi-displacement and planing hulls make different compromises between efficiency and speed. Multihulls introduce another set of characteristics, while sailing yachts may use their engines primarily for manoeuvring, calms and charging rather than continuous propulsion. Hybrid and battery-supported systems also need to be evaluated as complete energy systems rather than simply through fuel capacity.
Operating profile matters
An owner making short coastal passages at moderate speed will have a different annual fuel requirement from an owner regularly running long distances at high speed. Generator use and other onboard machinery can also contribute to fuel consumption while the yacht is stationary.
Using model data correctly
Luxury Yacht Guide records verified technical data where official evidence exists, but not every builder publishes every figure. Missing data should not be replaced by a guess.
