Smartgyro SG20 becomes part of the Sport Coupé 50 specification
Rio Yachts has installed a Smartgyro SG20 gyro stabiliser aboard the new Sport Coupé 50, extending an existing technical relationship between the two Italian companies. The yacht debuted at the Cannes Yachting Festival before appearing in Genoa with the stabilisation package in operation.
During commissioning and sea trials, Smartgyro says the SG20 achieved an 86% reduction in roll. The system is designed to improve comfort both underway and at anchor, supporting Rio’s aim of making the Sport Coupé 50 usable across a wide range of cruising conditions.
Existing cooperation already covers larger Rio models
Smartgyro equipment has previously been installed aboard Sport Coupé 58 yachts using the larger SG40 stabiliser. Those installations reportedly achieved roll reductions of up to 90% during trials, giving Rio a common technology platform across more than one model.
The SG20-to-SG150 product range allows the supplier to cover a broad spread of yacht sizes. For a builder, using related hardware across several platforms can simplify engineering, installation knowledge, training and aftersales support.
Stabilisation is becoming a core ownership expectation
Owners increasingly expect reduced roll at anchor as well as improved comfort underway, especially on yachts designed for extended family cruising. Gyro stabilisation has therefore shifted from being an occasional option toward a frequently specified part of the onboard comfort package.
The Rio installation also shows how equipment suppliers and builders are working more closely during development rather than treating stabilisers as late-stage additions. The longer-term test will be reliability, service access and performance after repeated use in varied sea conditions.
