Orange and Telesat have commissioned the first European ground gateway for the planned Telesat Lightspeed low-Earth-orbit constellation. The station is at Orange’s Bercenay-en-Othe teleport in France, providing an infrastructure milestone rather than a newly available broadband plan for individual yachts.
A ground station for a planned constellation
The partners’ 17 September announcement confirms installation and commissioning at a World Teleport Association Tier-4-certified Orange site. The ground segment will connect through Orange’s high-speed network towards a planned Telesat point of presence in Paris.
The gateway supports a programme initially planned around 225 satellites. A commissioned ground station is not proof that the entire constellation or every consumer service is commercially operational.
Why a gateway matters
A satellite network needs terrestrial links to move traffic into wider communications infrastructure. Orange says the French facility is intended to support resilient, low-latency connections for enterprise and government users once the wider system is deployed.
For a cruising yacht, infrastructure diversification may eventually improve choice among connectivity providers. Coverage, terminals, pricing, service eligibility and actual launch dates still depend on future commercial arrangements.
Yacht connectivity is a complete system
A 12–23.99m yacht needs an antenna, power, network installation and suitable plan, not simply a satellite footprint on a map. Owners should also distinguish operational communications from guest entertainment and protect access to connected technical systems.
Even with a satellite terminal, coastal mobile data or another independent service may be valuable. An advertised speed should never be mistaken for a guaranteed connection in every port or anchorage.
A milestone with clear limits
Telesat and Orange present this as part of a broader rollout and have not identified a specific leisure-yacht installation. It is an infrastructure announcement rather than a finished yacht delivery or sea trial.
