Marina Ibiza is inviting yacht owners and visitors to contribute directly to a marine-restoration project in nearby Talamanca Bay. The scheme centres on Posidonia oceanica, a seagrass habitat that is important to the Mediterranean's marine ecology.
The project is being developed with Vellmarí Association, founded by marine biologist and explorer Manu San Félix. The marina says that 1,500 new Posidonia shoots are scheduled to be planted in 2026 and that customers can sponsor them.
Linking marina use to habitat protection
The Marina Ibiza Posidonia Meadow project is intended to give visiting captains, owners and marina customers a role in the recovery effort. An adoption programme turns a broad conservation message into a concrete contribution.
The wider restoration programme addresses Talamanca Bay, where Marina Ibiza says nearly half the original meadow has been lost over recent decades. The damage illustrates why the environmental effect of recreational cruising is not confined to the marina buildings themselves.
Monitoring the results
The 2026 Blue Wake assessment records approximately 86,000 plants established since 2021 across almost 3,000 square metres. It reports survival above 90 per cent and 28 species recorded in restored areas.
Divers monitor fixed transects over time, helping distinguish persistent restoration from simply counting plantings. The figures remain measurements reported by the project and the award process rather than guarantees about future survival.
What smaller-yacht owners can do
Owners in the 12-to-24-metre market frequently cruise Mediterranean bays where anchoring can disturb seagrass. Marina participation can add to awareness, but responsible anchoring and obedience to local protection rules remain essential.
Supporting a new shoot does not undo damage to an existing meadow elsewhere. The local initiative is most meaningful when combined with everyday choices about moorings and navigation.
A local scheme with wider visibility
Monaco Yacht Show's Blue Wake programme selected Marina Ibiza for its yacht services, brokerage and charter category. The marina's own account explains the planting target and adoption programme, while the Monaco presentation placed the project before a wider marine-industry audience.
