Humphree has introduced a three-component stabilisation system that brings a gyro, active fins and interceptors into one coordinated control architecture. Instead of treating each technology as a separate add-on, the Swedish company says a central unit continuously analyses vessel movement and manages the components as one system.
The new arrangement is intended to improve comfort across a wider range of operating conditions, from low-speed and zero-speed situations through normal cruising. Humphree says the integrated package can reduce roll by up to 95 percent depending on boat type and operating conditions, while also giving builders a single supplier for integration and support.
Three stabilisation technologies are coordinated together
Gyros, fins and interceptors traditionally solve different parts of the motion-control problem, and many yachts use one or two of them independently. Humphree’s new approach is to coordinate all three so the control system can decide how to use each component rather than leaving them to behave as unrelated subsystems.
That matters because roll control at anchor, roll reduction underway and dynamic trim correction place different demands on hardware. A unified architecture can potentially use the strongest characteristic of each device while reducing unnecessary overlap, although the final result will still depend on hull form, displacement, installation geometry and sea state.
HIG5 starts a new gyro product family
The first gyro in the new range is called HIG5, and Humphree says it is managed continuously by a dedicated control unit as part of the wider stabilisation logic. The gyro generates a counteracting force as its flywheel spins at high speed, while the fins and interceptors contribute additional control according to vessel movement and operating condition.
Humphree describes the system as proactive because the control architecture works to counter motion before it has time to build fully. The company is not claiming a fixed performance figure for every installation; its stated roll-reduction figure of up to 95 percent is explicitly dependent on the yacht and the conditions in which the system is operating.
One supplier simplifies integration and support
For a boatbuilder, coordinating several motion-control technologies from different manufacturers can add engineering and commissioning work. Humphree is pitching the three-component package as a way to reduce that complexity by providing the hardware, central logic and long-term support within one technical ecosystem.
The company also highlights remote access as part of the ownership proposition. Humphree says its systems can be diagnosed, configured and supported remotely, including assistance with sea trials, which could reduce downtime when a yacht is cruising away from its original commissioning yard or dealer.
Cannes is the first public demonstration
Humphree is using the Cannes Yachting Festival for the debut of the integrated gyro system in September 2026. The company plans to demonstrate how the gyro, fins and interceptors work together in real time and how the package can be adapted to different vessel sizes and applications.
Availability is planned through boatbuilders and selected dealers in the Mediterranean region before a North American launch. That staged introduction should give installers time to build experience with the combined architecture while Humphree expands the HIG gyro family beyond its first model.
The significance is in the control architecture
The individual technologies are not new in isolation, so the more interesting development is the attempt to treat them as one motion-control system. As yachts become more electronically integrated, owners increasingly expect navigation, propulsion, power management and comfort systems to cooperate rather than operate as separate islands.
A coordinated stabilisation package follows the same direction by moving intelligence into the control layer. The practical test will be whether the software can consistently decide when to prioritise gyro torque, fin lift or interceptor action without creating unnecessary drag, noise or power demand.
Comfort technology is moving down the size range
Advanced stabilisation was once associated mainly with very large yachts, but gyros, compact fins and interceptors are now common on much smaller cruising boats. That trend makes integrated systems particularly relevant to the 12-to-24-metre market, where owners expect big-yacht comfort but machinery spaces and electrical capacity remain tightly constrained.
Humphree’s three-component concept therefore addresses more than headline roll reduction. If the integration proves effective in production installations, the real advantage may be achieving a broader comfort envelope with fewer compromises in commissioning, servicing and user control across the yacht’s operating life.
