MAN Engines has introduced the i6X as a new upper-output development of its established in-line six-cylinder yacht-engine family. The 12.4-litre engine reaches 1,000hp, or 735kW, while retaining the packaging and customer-interface philosophy of the existing MAN i6 platform.

The engine is aimed specifically at yachts and sport-fishing boats where installation space, weight and throttle response all matter alongside headline power. Its international premiere is taking place at the Cannes Yachting Festival, with a further showing scheduled for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show later in the season.

A compact six-cylinder moves into four-figure horsepower

The i6X develops a maximum torque of 3,250Nm at its 1,000hp rating, giving builders another route to high output without moving immediately to a larger V-engine installation. MAN quotes a power-to-weight ratio of about 0.8hp per kilogram at the top rating, a useful figure where machinery weight and longitudinal balance influence a yacht’s layout.

The architecture is a further development of MAN’s D2676 platform, already familiar in marine use as the i6. Common parts and unchanged customer interfaces are intended to make the new engine easier to integrate into established technical layouts while preserving familiar maintenance and operating practices.

Installation flexibility is part of the proposition

For production-yacht builders, an engine introduction is valuable only if it can be packaged without forcing wholesale changes elsewhere in the boat. MAN is therefore presenting the i6X as a higher-output extension of an existing platform rather than as an isolated power unit with an entirely new integration philosophy.

That continuity could be particularly relevant to models offered with several propulsion ratings or to yards developing faster derivatives of established hulls. A compact in-line configuration can also free designers to devote more volume to accommodation, tankage or service access, although the final installation will always depend on gearbox, exhaust and cooling requirements.

The engine is prepared for several regulatory markets

MAN says the i6X is being developed to meet IMO Tier II, EPA Tier III and the European Union Recreational Craft Directive requirements. That regulatory spread is important for production yachts sold into several regions, because an engine package often has to support the same model family across European and North American markets.

The company has not positioned the i6X as an immediate production engine, however. Series availability is planned from the first quarter of 2028, giving shipyards time to engineer installations, complete testing and decide where the additional output makes sense within future model programmes.

Cannes provides the first international showcase

The Cannes Yachting Festival runs from 8 to 13 September 2026, and MAN is using the event for the i6X international premiere. The engine sits directly within the size range relevant to Luxury Yacht Guide because its target applications include performance motor yachts and sport-fishing boats below the 24-metre threshold.

A second international presentation is scheduled for Fort Lauderdale from 28 October to 1 November 2026. Showing the same engine at major European and US events reflects the international market MAN is targeting and gives boatbuilders on both sides of the Atlantic an early look well before serial availability.

More power does not remove the need for whole-boat engineering

A 1,000hp six-cylinder creates opportunities, but selecting an engine is still a whole-vessel decision rather than a simple power comparison. Fuel capacity, propeller loading, transmission choice, exhaust routing, cooling airflow and service access all determine whether a higher-output package improves the yacht as a complete system.

For buyers, the most relevant question will eventually be which builders adopt the i6X and how they use its additional output. A well-integrated installation may support speed or cruising flexibility, while poor matching between engine, hull and propulsion system can erase much of the benefit suggested by the specification sheet.

The i6X broadens MAN’s yacht-engine ladder

The new model gives MAN a stronger bridge between its existing six-cylinder yacht engines and larger power packages. That can matter to builders trying to keep machinery compact while moving a model upward in performance, particularly where familiar interfaces reduce redesign work and simplify training for technicians.

The first production applications will reveal whether yards use the i6X mainly for outright speed, for heavily equipped cruising yachts or as a packaging alternative to larger engines. For now, Cannes marks the start of a two-year engineering runway before MAN plans to make the engine available in series form.
