Beyond the Sea is bringing DynaKite to the Cannes Yachting Festival 2026 as a working example of wind power being added to a modern propulsion system rather than treated as a separate sailing philosophy. The French company positions the automated kite as a supplementary source of thrust for yachts and other vessels from 12 metres upward.

The technology will be demonstrated aboard e-Lektra, a solar-electric catamaran operated by Paradis des Bulles. With a DynaKite 120 installed, the boat combines solar generation, battery-electric propulsion and wind traction in one platform, allowing visitors and press to see how the systems can complement each other in real operating conditions.

DynaKite uses wind without a conventional rig

The system flies a kite well above the vessel, where the wind can be stronger and cleaner than at deck level. Automated controls manage the kite's flight and are designed to optimise the traction it produces, allowing the equipment to contribute useful forward force without requiring a mast, standing rigging or a conventional sail plan.

Beyond the Sea says the latest DynaKite concept combines lessons from its simpler LibertyKite with automation developed for the larger SeaKite programme. The result is intended to make kite propulsion practical for yachts whose owners want another renewable-energy input without converting the vessel into a sailing yacht.

Two power levels target different vessel sizes

DynaKite is being offered in 60 and 120 versions, giving designers and operators a choice of scale depending on the vessel and required assistance. The company describes the system as suitable for yachts from 12 metres, while the larger configuration on e-Lektra provides a visible demonstration of the technology on a multihull with significant onboard electrical demand.

Installation is deliberately presented as relatively compact, with the deck equipment designed to avoid the structural and spatial commitment of a tall sailing rig. That could make the concept relevant to existing electric or hybrid yachts where owners want to add wind assistance but do not want a fundamental redesign of accommodation or deck circulation.

Range is the central electric-yacht problem

Electric propulsion can deliver quiet operation and local zero-emission running, but storing enough energy for long passages adds cost and battery mass. DynaKite addresses the problem from the opposite direction: instead of carrying ever more stored energy, the vessel can use available wind to reduce the load on its propulsion system when conditions are favourable.

The benefit will vary with route, weather, speed and the amount of traction that can be used safely at a given moment. That variability means kite assistance cannot be treated like a fixed battery-capacity figure, but it may still extend effective range or reduce energy consumption over passages where wind direction and strength suit the system.

Automation is what separates the idea from a tow kite

The key engineering challenge is control. Beyond the Sea says DynaKite can fly continuous loops and manage its own trajectory, using a DynaPod and automated flight logic to maintain traction while avoiding line-management problems that would make a manually flown kite impractical for routine yacht operation.

For owners, the technology will only be persuasive if launching, recovering and monitoring the kite becomes a normal onboard procedure rather than a specialist exercise. Reliability in changing wind, safe integration with the main propulsion controls and clear operating limits will therefore matter as much as the headline amount of renewable thrust available.

Cannes provides a live demonstration rather than a static display

Beyond the Sea plans demonstrations and press runs with e-Lektra during the festival, while also exhibiting at the Palais des Festivals. That gives the company an opportunity to move the conversation away from diagrams and show how quickly the system deploys, how much deck space it occupies and how the crew interacts with it underway.

The demonstration is particularly relevant to multihulls and efficient displacement craft, where modest reductions in propulsion demand can have a meaningful effect on electrical endurance. It also shows how future low-emission yachts may combine several energy sources instead of relying on one technology to solve every operating condition.

The next evidence will come from hours at sea

As with any alternative propulsion system, long-term operating data will decide how useful DynaKite becomes outside demonstrations. Owners will want to know the maintenance burden, usable wind envelope, average energy savings and how the system behaves during real passages rather than only in carefully selected test conditions.

Its Cannes appearance is nevertheless significant because it places automated kite traction directly into the leisure-yacht market. If the technology proves easy to use, it could become one more tool for owners seeking greater electric range and lower fuel consumption without giving up the layouts and propulsion systems of modern motor yachts and catamarans.
