Digital Yacht has introduced the AIT6000 Nucleus, a new Class B+ AIS transponder built around a 5W transmitter and a wider set of onboard networking features. The unit is designed to do more than broadcast a yacht's position, combining AIS, GPS, Wi-Fi, NMEA 2000 data handling and safety alarms in one installation.
The most distinctive feature is Digital Yacht's SPAIS technology, developed to make transmissions more suitable for reception by AIS satellites. That extends the product's relevance beyond local ship-to-ship visibility and reflects the growing use of space-based AIS services for tracking vessels beyond the practical range of shore receivers.
Class B+ brings more transmission power
The AIT6000 uses the Class B+ standard and transmits at 5W, giving it more output power than traditional 2W Class B equipment. For a luxury yacht, the attraction is improved visibility to surrounding traffic while retaining a system intended for non-SOLAS vessels rather than the larger Class A equipment normally associated with commercial ships.
Digital Yacht has also integrated a patented lossless VHF antenna splitter. That allows the main VHF aerial to be shared between the radio and AIS transponder, reducing the need for a second antenna installation and helping simplify retrofit projects where mast space and cable runs are already crowded.
SPAIS is designed for satellite reception
Space-based AIS can extend tracking coverage far offshore, but satellite reception presents different challenges from local terrestrial receivers because many transmissions can arrive in the same footprint. Digital Yacht says its proprietary SPAIS approach optimises the messages sent by the transponder to improve the prospects of reliable long-range satellite reception.
The feature can be activated through the unit's configuration interface, allowing an owner or installer to enable the satellite-oriented behaviour when it suits the yacht's operating programme. For boats making longer passages, the combination of local AIS visibility and improved compatibility with satellite reception adds another layer to position reporting.
Wi-Fi turns AIS data into a broader onboard feed
The AIT6000 includes Wi-Fi capable of serving tablets and smartphones, allowing navigation applications to receive AIS and GPS data without another wireless gateway. Digital Yacht says the interface can support up to seven mobile devices, which is useful on yachts where the helm, saloon and crew spaces may all use separate screens.
Its wireless output is not limited to AIS. The transponder can also pass information from the yacht's NMEA 2000 network, including data such as depth, heading, speed and wind, so compatible software can use the AIT6000 as a broader bridge between installed instruments and portable displays.
Collision and anchor alarms are built in
A web interface provides access to diagnostics and safety functions, including collision calculations based on closest point of approach and time to closest point of approach. The system can also provide anchor alerts, giving owners another way to monitor movement when the yacht is lying at anchor.
Those warnings can be passed onto the NMEA 2000 network and the power/data cable includes a switched output for an audible alarm. The aim is to make AIS information actionable rather than simply presenting a list of nearby targets, although owners still need to treat electronic alerts as an aid rather than a substitute for a proper lookout.
Integration matters more as helms become networked
Modern yacht helms increasingly depend on shared data rather than isolated instruments. Combining AIS, GPS, NMEA 2000 multiplexing, Wi-Fi and VHF antenna sharing in one device can reduce the number of separate boxes required, but it also makes careful installation and network configuration more important because several functions depend on the same hardware.
For refit projects, the AIT6000 therefore sits between a simple electronics upgrade and a small network redesign. Installers will need to check antenna arrangements, NMEA 2000 capacity, power supply and the way alerts are distributed to the yacht's existing multifunction displays before deciding how much older equipment can be removed.
Satellite-ready AIS broadens the safety conversation
The AIT6000 arrives as owners expect more continuity between coastal navigation and offshore connectivity. Satellite AIS does not provide the same service as distress beacons or satellite communications, but making a yacht's AIS transmissions easier to receive from space can improve the wider picture available to tracking services when the vessel is far from shore infrastructure.
Digital Yacht's new transponder is therefore notable less for any single specification than for the number of functions being consolidated around AIS. For owners upgrading a sub-24-metre yacht, it offers a route to stronger local transmission, simpler antenna use, wireless data access and a more connected approach to navigation and safety monitoring.
