A marina visit often starts with a long road journey followed by short local trips. Volvo’s new long-range plug-in hybrid XC60 and XC90 variants are designed around that pattern, with preliminary WLTP electric ranges of up to 200 and 160 kilometres respectively when fully charged.

Two SUVs with different cabin priorities

The refreshed XC60 has updated front and rear styling, while the larger XC90 remains aimed at households that value more space and a relaxed cabin. Both offer the possibility of covering many ordinary journeys using electric power, with a petrol engine available on longer routes.

The manufacturer’s range figures are preliminary standardised-test results rather than promises for a heavily loaded car. Temperature, road conditions, equipment, speed and use of heating or cooling will change actual consumption.

Battery and technology changes

Volvo says a larger floor-integrated battery and more powerful electric motor extend electric range to more than twice the previous plug-in hybrid versions. Both models retain mild-hybrid alternatives, so customers should check the drivetrain on the actual vehicle offered.

The updated cars also bring Google-built-in functions and optional cabin features, including a Bowers & Wilkins audio system. Feature availability and subscriptions differ by market and trim.

Connecting home, marina and holiday stay

For a yachting family, local electric running could cover hotel-to-marina transfers, provisioning and nearby outings when charging is available. The petrol engine adds flexibility on longer motorway journeys, but the total running cost still depends on where and how the vehicle is charged.

An owner should establish parking, charging access and luggage requirements at the destination. A yacht’s shore-power pedestal is not automatically a lawful or safe charging outlet for a car.

Launch timing

Volvo announced the variants on 15 September with order books opening in selected markets and production due later in the autumn. Availability and specifications may differ by territory, so immediate delivery should not be assumed.
