The Windy SR40 is set to make its UK debut at the 2026 Southampton International Boat Show, bringing a 12.20m inboard or 13.05m outboard sports-yacht package designed with Espen Øino International to British buyers for the first time. The model sits just above Luxury Yacht Guide's 12-metre lower threshold in its inboard form and offers two quite different propulsion layouts without changing the basic purpose of the boat.
Windy positions the SR40 as a fast, offshore-capable sports boat that can also work as a weekend yacht or large chase boat. Its design brief combines Scandinavian styling with a protected helm, flexible cockpit and accommodation below, rather than relying on outright speed as the only selling point.
Two lengths reflect two propulsion layouts
Windy lists the SR40 at 12.20m overall with inboard propulsion and 13.05m with outboards, both on a 4.00m beam. The inboard version can be specified with twin Volvo Penta D6-440 DPI or D6-480 DPI installations, while the outboard package offers either three Mercury V10 400s or two Mercury V12 600s.
Those choices materially change the performance envelope. Windy quotes up to 42 knots for the inboard version and up to 52 knots for the outboard, with corresponding cruising speeds of about 34 and 40 knots. Published range is up to 290 nautical miles inboard and 180 nautical miles outboard, subject to engine choice, load and conditions.
Espen Øino shapes the exterior and hull concept
Naval architecture and exterior design are credited to Espen Øino International, while Design Unlimited and Windy Design handle the interior. The result uses a deep-V performance hull, a protected central helm and sliding side doors that can be opened to give the cockpit a much more exposed, open-boat character in good weather.
Fold-down bulwarks expand the social area at anchor, while the roof can carry equipment such as paddleboards, bicycles or watersports gear. That mix of enclosed protection and open-deck flexibility is particularly relevant in northern European cruising, where a boat may need to handle very different weather during the same day.
Weekend accommodation extends the SR40 beyond day-boat use
Below deck, the SR40 can be arranged with sleeping accommodation for up to four depending on configuration, including an optional aft cabin. Windy also specifies 200 litres of fresh water, 100 litres of black-water capacity and 1,130 litres of fuel, giving the boat systems more typical of a weekender than a simple high-performance day boat.
The model is CE Category B and Windy lists a lightship displacement of about 10.4 tonnes. Those figures reinforce the distinction between the SR40 and smaller open sports boats: despite its speed, it has been developed around offshore use, shelter and meaningful onboard accommodation.
Southampton gives UK buyers their first close inspection
Southampton International Boat Show runs from 18 to 27 September 2026 and identifies the SR40 among the yachts making a UK debut. For buyers, the useful comparison will be between the two propulsion philosophies rather than headline speed alone, because inboard and outboard installations affect range, cockpit packaging, service access and how the transom is used.
