A traditional garment with a technical brief
Musto has introduced a Full-Zip EVO windproof layer that combines traditional knitted styling with materials designed to resist wind penetration. The garment was presented in September 2026 in a programme that included testing by professional sailor Tom Court.
For many cruising yacht owners, clothing needs to work in several situations. A layer may be worn in the cockpit, when moving around a marina or while spending time ashore, so comfort and practicality can matter as much as a highly specialised racing appearance.
Wind protection is not the same as waterproofing
Windproof construction can reduce the cooling effect of air moving across a garment, which is useful on an exposed deck. However, preventing wind from passing through a fabric does not automatically mean that the garment is designed to keep out driving rain or breaking waves.
A sailor's clothing system should therefore account for the forecast and the likely activity. In more demanding weather, waterproof outerwear, suitable base layers and protection for hands and feet may still be required.
Testing in exposed conditions
Musto's promotional programme included Tom Court using the Full-Zip EVO while undertaking outdoor activities. Such field demonstrations can help show how a garment moves during real use, although buyers should distinguish a manufacturer-led test from independent laboratory certification.
Important practical questions include whether the collar and cuffs remain comfortable under a jacket, how the zip behaves after repeated use and whether the fabric dries quickly enough for a routine cruising schedule. Buyers should also check the fibre content and care instructions before choosing it for repeated onboard use.
Layers are useful on medium-size yachts
The exposed decks of a 12-to-24-metre yacht can feel cooler than nearby shore areas, particularly when travelling at speed. A lightweight wind-resistant layer may be useful during mild conditions when full foul-weather clothing would be uncomfortable.
Owners should consider the balance between warmth and freedom of movement, particularly for crew members handling lines or working around deck equipment. Clothing must not introduce loose elements that could catch on machinery or fittings.
Musto's wider approach to nautical clothing
Musto produces both specialist sailing equipment and more casual clothing intended for maritime lifestyles. The EVO development illustrates a category between the two: a practical piece designed to provide technical benefit without resembling a heavy offshore jacket.
The manufacturer also revived elements of its Musto Country line during the season, reflecting interest in classic forms and materials. For sailors, the important point remains whether the garment performs well under the conditions for which it is selected.
A September product introduction
The Full-Zip EVO announcement is a new-season clothing release, not evidence of a newly launched boat or propulsion system. Prices, sizes, colours and independent test results should be checked through the manufacturer and authorised retailers.
For yacht owners, the practical lesson is that comfort depends on a complete clothing system rather than one high-profile product. A versatile windproof layer can be useful, but it should form part of preparation based on actual cruising conditions.
