Maritimo's late-August cruising feature explores the Kimberley coast of Western Australia, a region where large tidal movements make careful passage planning central to the experience. Its suggested route begins around Broome and reaches north-east towards Wyndham.
The account is a destination briefing for long-range yacht owners, not a report that an individual Maritimo has completed the entire passage. LYG uses an official M60 model image solely as an in-scope yacht reference.
The coast offers a long sequence of islands, river entrances and sheltered inlets. The manufacturer suggests allowing considerably more than a brief stop to appreciate the area.
Tides define the journey
Broome provides a practical gateway, with the Buccaneer Archipelago farther along the coast. More than a thousand islands create a complicated network of channels and anchorages.
Maritimo highlights the Horizontal Falls as an illustration of how fast-changing tidal levels affect the passage through narrow gaps. Water that looks quiet at one state of tide may become hazardous later.
Montgomery Reef is another highly tide-dependent landscape, with extensive reef exposed as water falls. Visiting by tender requires attention to marine-park controls and the ecological sensitivity of the area.
Reefs, rivers and anchorages
The Prince Regent River and King George River offer very different inland waterways framed by sandstone country. Their conditions and access should be checked using current official information.
A remote voyage requires greater attention to fuel, drinking water, refrigeration and equipment redundancy. The best configuration will depend on vessel range and the size of the crew.
Maritimo describes the usual cruising season as falling outside the tropical wet season, while noting different conditions throughout the year. Weather and tides must still be checked for each passage.
Respecting the coastline
The company also emphasises Aboriginal cultural connections and the need to observe Traditional Owner guidance, permissions and local closures. The region is not an unrestricted playground simply because it is remote.
