Condensation is a quiet source of interior damage

Air-conditioning equipment collects moisture from the surrounding air, and that water must be routed away through a drain system. When a drain blocks or a condensate pan overflows, the leak may spread behind joinery or beneath furnishings before anyone notices it.

The IBEX judging panel recognised FlowGuard because it combines water sensing in the drain pan with controls that take action. On privately used yachts, especially those left closed between visits, early detection can be valuable because crew members are not always near each air handler.

Sensing alone is only part of the response

FlowGuard's approach includes control-board logic that alerts an operator and stops air-conditioning operation until the fault is addressed. This differs from a passive alarm that may continue sounding while water is still being produced by the running system.

Stopping the affected equipment can limit additional condensate, but a shutdown is not itself proof that the blocked drain or leak has been repaired. The cause needs to be located and corrected before the equipment is put back into normal operation.

Installation quality will determine the outcome

A vessel's air-conditioning layout may contain several fan-coil units, condensate traps, lift pumps or drains with different gradients. A protective device has to be integrated with the actual controls and electrical configuration rather than assumed to work identically everywhere.

The award announcement does not include a universal retrofit kit specification or pricing. Owners should ask HVAC technicians how sensors are located, how alarms appear, what happens after a reset and whether the intended shutdown affects only one air handler or a wider system.

The relevance is high for owner-operated yachts

Small, concealed leaks can have an outsized effect on fine cabinetry, flooring and soft furnishings, making this a practical maintenance story for the 12-to-23.99-metre market. Preventing additional moisture is useful even when the system itself is relatively modest.

The October IBEX recognition follows a competition of one hundred product entries and identifies the integrated alarm-and-shutdown approach as the differentiator. Readers should regard the award as evidence of technical interest, not as an independent guarantee against every form of onboard water damage.
