Dometic has brought its FreshJet rooftop climate platform into the marine market with the FJXM7 3500. The compact inverter-driven unit is engineered specifically for vibration, salt exposure and vessel motion.
Unveiled on 28 May 2026, the system gives builders and owners another way to provide cooling without committing to a larger split or chilled-water installation. The design is aimed particularly at boats where interior technical volume is limited.
A rooftop package changes installation
Self-contained rooftop air conditioning can reduce the amount of interior volume given over to ducts, compressors and technical cabinets. Packaging the main hardware above the accommodation can simplify some retrofit and production layouts.
The trade-off is that roof loading, drainage, acoustic isolation and the visual impact of the unit all have to be considered at the design stage. Installers also need a clear route for condensate and electrical connections.
Inverter control targets efficiency
Dometic says inverter technology allows compressor output to follow actual cooling demand instead of cycling only between full power and off. That can smooth electrical loads and improve temperature stability.
This is relevant on boats using shore power, generators or battery-supported AC systems because sudden compressor starts can be a significant part of the electrical design. More even demand can make the wider energy system easier to manage.
Marinisation goes beyond the casing
The company highlights stainless marine components, coated coils and compressor mounting engineered for movement at sea. Those details distinguish the unit from equipment intended mainly for road or static applications.
Salt-laden air, vibration and repeated movement can shorten the life of ordinary HVAC hardware. Owners will still need routine cleaning and corrosion checks, especially on exposed installations.
A useful option for compact yachts
The FreshJet will not replace chilled-water systems on every yacht, but it adds another packaging choice where installation speed and space are priorities. It may be particularly useful for enclosed deck spaces and smaller accommodation zones.
Owners should compare total installed cost, acoustic performance, cooling capacity and service access rather than the unit price alone. The best solution will depend on how the yacht is used and where the air-conditioning hardware can realistically be fitted.
