Recognition for the flagship express cruiser

BENETEAU has confirmed that the Gran Turismo 50 won the Best Exterior Design category at the 2026 World Yacht Trophies. The 15.95-metre motor yacht is the flagship of a new Gran Turismo generation, developed around a lower silhouette and greater use of open-air deck space.

The award concerns a finished design and should not be confused with the company’s separate nominations in forthcoming industry competitions. The builder announced the recognition on 5 October and has since been promoting the design details that distinguish the latest model from its predecessor.

At this size, buyers are often choosing between conventional enclosed cruisers and boats offering a more direct connection with the water. BENETEAU’s approach is to make the aft cockpit and swim area the social centre of the yacht.

A lower profile changes the onboard experience

BENETEAU says the roofline is more than 37 centimetres lower than the previous generation, producing a sleeker profile. The new aft cockpit deck is approximately 90 centimetres above the water, reducing the visual distance between passengers and their surroundings.

The company has also simplified the access to the cockpit, replacing the three steps used in the earlier arrangement with a single step. Details such as this can materially affect the comfort of guests moving between the saloon and the aft deck during a day at anchor.

When the extending aft platforms are opened, the usable outdoor surface is more than double that of the previous model, according to BENETEAU. Buyers should examine the platforms’ operating limits, loading and maintenance requirements as part of assessing that impressive amount of space.

Design direction draws on the idea of Yūgen

The team cites the Japanese concept of Yūgen as an influence on the new design, describing an approach to subtle beauty, feeling and the understated relationship between a person and the environment. The resulting exterior aims to be elegant without relying on elaborate decoration.

Robert Chaffer, product manager for the range, identifies research into the expectations of express-cruiser customers as a foundation for the redesign. Particular attention was given to expanding outdoor activities when the yacht is stopped or anchored.

The philosophy may help explain the appearance, but an owner still needs a boat that works in real conditions. Helm visibility, cockpit drainage, noise, propulsion equipment and the way the new platforms interact with berthing arrangements should all be examined independently.

Further nominations and practical ownership

The Gran Turismo 50 is also a finalist in the Best Big Boats category of Best of Boats 2026 and for European Yacht of the Year 2027. The relevant results are scheduled for 26 November in Berlin and 23 January 2027 in Düsseldorf, so neither distinction should yet be reported as a win.

The model has an advertised beam of 4.48 metres, giving buyers a useful starting point for assessing berthing arrangements and deck proportions. Full technical specifications, local prices and engine options should be confirmed with the manufacturer or an authorised dealer.

For owners seeking a modern luxury cruiser under twenty-four metres, the award highlights one notable design direction: bringing more of daily life outdoors and closer to the sea. The advantages are worth assessing through a full inspection rather than treating a design trophy as the final word.
