A connector recognised at IBEX
AquaAmp received an honourable mention in the electrical systems category of the 2026 IBEX Innovation Awards for its Smart DT Connector. The award announcement on 6 October recognised a small component designed to simplify the task of powering 12-volt accessories from a 24-volt onboard wiring system.
A connector may seem less conspicuous than a new display or motor, but electrical installation details can have a disproportionate effect on maintenance. This product is relevant to builders and refit yards configuring circuits on 12-to-23.99-metre yachts.
Voltage conversion within a familiar format
AquaAmp describes the device as a Deutsch DT-style connector incorporating a 24V-to-12V converter within the housing. The manufacturer states that it replaces the DT04-2P format and mates with a DT06-2S counterpart, allowing installers to keep an existing harness architecture.
The converter accepts up to 30 volts input and provides a regulated 12-volt output rated at a maximum of three amperes. It is not intended to supply high-load pumps or appliances that exceed the specified output power.
Waterproofing and installation constraints
The maker lists an IP67 enclosure with fully potted electronics and specifies an ignition-protection design under relevant marine standards. Fully encapsulated components may help reduce exposure to moisture, though connectors can still be damaged by incorrect termination or installation.
A technician should verify polarity, cable capacity, fuse protection and physical strain relief before installing any conversion module. The stated waterproofing does not eliminate the need for proper routing and inspection of the surrounding wiring.
Why 24-volt boats need 12-volt accessories
Many mid-sized yachts distribute electrical power at 24 volts while carrying devices designed for a lower input voltage. Providing power to a small charger or electronic accessory normally requires a suitable conversion stage, adding hardware and possible points of failure.
Integrating a converter into a connector may help reduce bulky separate modules in certain installations. The approach is useful only where the current requirements, thermal conditions and electrical environment fall inside the manufacturer’s specifications.
What AquaAmp supplies
AquaAmp develops rugged charging and connectivity equipment for marine applications, including wireless phone chargers and modular onboard power arrangements. The Smart DT Connector is presented as compatible with many of its lower-power accessories.
The company also offers OEM integration support, allowing builders to consider connectors as part of the original electrical system. Owners evaluating a retrofit should ask for a wiring diagram and confirm that existing device warranties remain valid.
Buyer checks after the award
The 2026 honourable mention establishes recognition from the IBEX judging process, not a guarantee of suitability for every yacht. Individual installations should account for electrical load, fire protection, documentation and the ability to diagnose faults later.
The component illustrates how small changes to familiar marine hardware can improve installation flexibility. Practical value will depend on careful engineering rather than simply replacing every traditional connector with a programmable or converted unit.
Long-term service
Installers should label converted connections to avoid confusion during later maintenance. A future technician must know that the connector changes voltage rather than serving solely as a passive link.
A clear record of fuse ratings and wiring routes can reduce troubleshooting time when accessories are changed. Equipment upgrades are most successful when this information remains with the yacht after ownership transfers.
