AIRMAR has expanded beyond sensors with a new line of NMEA 2000-approved cables and connectors aimed at professional marine network installations. The range covers the core components needed to build, extend or service a yacht’s NMEA 2000 backbone.
Construction targets harsh marine service
AIRMAR specifies zinc-alloy metal connector bodies with gold-plated pins to maintain secure electrical contact in demanding environments. The cables use UL-certified construction and waterproof moulded connectors, with shielding arranged to protect signal integrity and reduce radio-frequency interference.
Network faults are often caused by installation quality rather than the electronics connected to the backbone. Higher-quality connectors cannot compensate for poor topology or termination, but robust construction can reduce avoidable failures at individual joints.
The range covers complete backbone builds
Products include standard tee and four-way tee connectors, male and female termination resistors, a micro power tee and field-installable male and female connectors. Backbone and drop cables are offered in multiple lengths, allowing installers to avoid unnecessary joins or oversized cable coils.
Field-installable connectors are particularly useful when cable runs pass through restricted spaces where a pre-moulded connector cannot easily be pulled. They also make repairs and custom-length installations more practical during refits.
Standards compatibility protects mixed-brand systems
AIRMAR states that the new components are fully NMEA 2000 approved and compatible with compliant networks from other manufacturers. That matters because most yacht networks combine displays, sensors, engines, tank monitors and control products from several brands.
Using approved cabling preserves the plug-and-play principle that underpins NMEA 2000 and reduces the temptation to improvise with unsuitable connectors. Correct power injection, two termination resistors and appropriate backbone layout remain essential regardless of component brand.
A small component with large reliability consequences
Cables and tees are rarely the most visible part of a navigation refit, yet one poor connection can disrupt data for several systems at once. AIRMAR’s entry into the category gives installers another certified source for the physical network layer alongside the company’s sensors.
