A coastal weekend can involve more luggage than a city break, especially when boating equipment joins the usual bags. Toyota’s bZ4X Touring is intended for that kind of journey, with a 669-litre boot, roof rails and an all-wheel-drive version rated to tow up to 1,500 kilograms.
A recent independent towing award
Toyota’s 21 September release reports that the bZ4X Touring AWD won its category in the 2027 Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year awards. The assessment included controlled towing tests at the UTAC Millbrook proving ground, rather than simply comparing brochure ratings.
The judging category concerned a caravan load, not a particular boat trailer. Owners should still calculate the fully loaded trailer, nose weight and legal vehicle-trailer combination before towing any tender or leisure craft.
Space for more than overnight luggage
The Touring body adds nearly 50% more load space than the standard bZ4X, according to the maker, with a quoted 669-litre boot. Roof rails add carrying options, subject to their 80-kilogram published limit.
A long weekend might include paddleboards, clothing, provisions and sports equipment, but cargo distribution affects the vehicle and the remaining towing allowance. Roof loads and trailer requirements must be assessed together.
Electric all-wheel-drive specification
The AWD model uses a 74.7kWh gross-capacity battery and a combined 380 DIN horsepower. Toyota lists up to 297 miles on the WLTP combined test for the UK version, with charging from 10% to 80% in about 28 minutes under suitable conditions.
Actual range when towing can be substantially lower and depends on the trailer, speed, temperature and terrain. Drivers should plan compatible charging stops with the full car-and-trailer footprint in mind.
A shore-side complement to yacht ownership
The vehicle may suit a family moving between home, marina and accommodation, or transporting a suitable small craft on a trailer. It is not a tow vehicle for a 12–23.99m yacht simply because its owner uses one.
