The sailing industry extends well beyond the people on a race boat. The RYA and SailGP announced JUMP, a work-shadowing programme aimed at young women interested in the many roles that support an international racing event.

A view behind the public spectacle

The programme, described by the RYA earlier in 2026, targets participants aged 16 to 25 and offers short placements around SailGP activity. Opportunities span aspects of marketing, communications, events and performance support rather than placing every participant aboard an F50.

An event weekend can make different professions visible, but a work-shadowing placement is not an employment guarantee. Availability and eligibility follow the organisers’ published application rules.

Learning from working teams

Seeing how crews, shore operations and event staff coordinate offers a more realistic account of the sector than a spectator’s view alone. A young person can assess which work environment fits their skills and interests before committing to more specialised training.

The value comes from observation, questions and relevant follow-up opportunities. Each participant’s experience will depend on the department, mentor and event circumstances.

A pathway linked to the water

Yacht businesses also need engineers, photographers, logisticians, communications staff and hospitality professionals. Skills developed around a racing event can introduce roles that exist elsewhere across the wider marine industry.

The connection does not mean professional yacht crew certification comes automatically through a SailGP placement. Roles involving vessels have separate training and safety requirements.

The 2026 programme in context

JUMP’s announced opportunities included activity around the Portsmouth event in July. This article reviews that initiative and does not suggest that an expired application window is still open in late September.
