A new meeting devoted entirely to yacht refit
The Marine Industries Association of South Florida has announced RefitX, a two-day conference and exhibition dedicated to yacht refit work. The first full event is scheduled for 27–28 October 2027 during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, with a preview of selected themes planned during the 2026 show.
The initiative is being developed in cooperation with the organisers of the boat show. It is intended to bring together shipyards, engineers, designers, suppliers and project managers who may otherwise meet only when working on an individual vessel.
The Broward County Convention Center provides a base
RefitX is scheduled for the Atlantic Ballroom at the Broward County Convention Center, part of the facility's expanded exhibition space. The dedicated venue will allow technical discussions and displays to run alongside one of the largest international gatherings of the recreational marine industry.
A refit-focused meeting needs a different format from a new-model boat show. Owners may be choosing between replacing equipment and extending the life of existing systems, while professionals need to compare methods, budgets and constraints that are rarely visible in a finished yacht's sales presentation.
Complex work requires cooperation between trades
Modern refits can involve electrical distribution, engine service, hydraulic equipment, navigation systems, plumbing and interior alterations. Even a yacht within the 12-to-24-metre sector can present significant coordination challenges when several trades need to work in a confined space.
An engineer replacing propulsion equipment may depend on work by an electrician and a structural specialist, while interior changes can affect maintenance access. Planning those dependencies before yard work begins can help reduce delays and unexpected costs.
Programme themes extend beyond technology
The organisers say the conference will address new materials, project management, yard modernisation, skills and workforce development, sustainability, supply chains and changing owner expectations. The proposed format includes expert-led sessions and case studies alongside a specialised exhibition.
Case studies may be particularly valuable when they explain not only a successful result but the choices and trade-offs encountered along the way. Owners benefit from understanding which risks were identified early and which procedures helped maintain control of cost and schedule.
A practical interest for private yacht owners
A refit is often one of the largest costs a yacht owner faces after purchase. Decisions about upgrades need to account for hull condition, expected years of ownership, the availability of replacement components and the extent to which an improvement will affect the vessel's usefulness.
Not every yacht benefits from the most advanced equipment available. A simpler system with reliable local support may be preferable to a complicated installation that requires specialist visits from another country. The correct answer depends on the vessel and its operating profile.
A preview in 2026, full launch next year
Organisers intend to introduce elements of RefitX at the Fort Lauderdale boat show running 28 October–1 November 2026, while the full standalone programme will follow in October 2027. More information on exhibitors, speakers and registration is expected as plans develop.
The announcement establishes a future professional event, not a completed conference. For owners and refit managers, it provides a date to monitor and an indication that the industry's focus on extending vessel service life is growing alongside new-build demand.
