Portimão in Portugal will host the 2026 World Sailing Inclusion Championships, with racing scheduled for 4–10 October. World Sailing says more than 200 athletes from over 40 nations have registered across eight disciplines, alongside a development programme for sailors, coaches and race officials.

A broad range of adapted formats

The second edition brings Para Inclusive sailing classes together, rather than organising the gathering around a single keelboat or dinghy. The programme is designed to include athletes with different impairments and levels of experience, with race equipment suited to the disciplines.

The numbers published on 10 September refer to registered competitors, not the final starting fleet. Entries, classifications and race schedules are subject to the governing documentation.

Development beyond competition

World Sailing’s Inclusive Development Programme precedes the racing, supporting participants and officials from emerging sailing nations. Training and knowledge sharing form part of the event alongside the world-title competition.

The organiser has emphasised accessible pontoons and lifting infrastructure at Marina de Portimão. Those arrangements concern the championship and should not be assumed to provide an unrestricted service for every private visiting yacht.

Relevance to the wider yachting sector

Access arrangements, crew communication and adapted equipment have lessons for marinas, boat builders and sailing programmes serving a wider population. An owner of a 12–23.99m vessel may encounter similar considerations when designing boarding or hosting guests with mobility needs.

A successful competition facility is not an automatic certification for an individual yacht. Any onboard modification must be evaluated against the vessel’s actual structure, safety and operating requirements.

A dated official preview

World Sailing’s most recent registration update identifies the 4–10 October racing window; earlier announcements described a broader event period including the development programme. The distinction matters when arranging travel and reporting dates.
