The appointment adds a Hobart base to the network
Boat Sales Tasmania operates from the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania in Sandy Bay, Hobart, where it has served the local boating community since 1988. Maritimo says the business has already installed its digital displays and branding and will represent the luxury motor-yacht range to Tasmanian owners and visiting boaters.
The dealership is headed by Matthew and Alex Johnston, who acquired Boat Sales Tasmania in May 2025. Their existing operation represents Jeanneau power and sail boats and Grand Inflatable Boats, giving the new Maritimo consultancy an established customer base and day-to-day presence in the local marine market.
Tasmania brings a demanding cruising environment
Maritimo points to Tasmania’s rugged coastline and experienced boating community as a natural fit for its long-range motor yachts. The state has about 31,000 registered boat owners and also attracts yachts from elsewhere in Australia whose owners base them locally for a season while exploring the island’s coastline and waterways.
Matthew Johnston said shaft-drive engineering, durability and straightforward maintenance are attributes that appeal to Tasmanian customers. Those considerations are especially relevant in a region where boats can spend extended periods away from major service centres and where offshore conditions place a premium on reliable systems.
The Johnston team brings marine-industry experience
Matthew Johnston’s background includes marine operations, sales, international marketing and executive leadership, including roles with Muir Windlasses Australia and TasPorts. He is also a past commodore of the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania and an experienced offshore sailor, combining commercial experience with direct knowledge of the local boating environment.
Maritimo founder Bill Barry-Cotter linked the appointment to shared values around Australian manufacturing, precision and product quality. Australasian Sales Manager Danny Jordin said the company sees opportunities to build its presence in Tasmania through a locally based team with an established marine business and marina location.
Local activity is scheduled to begin this year
Boat Sales Tasmania is planning a Maritimo open day in November and intends to attend the 2027 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Those activities will give prospective owners opportunities to engage with the brand locally and then see the wider Maritimo range at one of Australia’s major marine exhibitions.
For Maritimo, the appointment expands coverage inside its home market while maintaining the consultant model it uses internationally. For buyers, the practical effect is a closer point of contact for sales, product information and ownership support in a region where many yachts are used for serious coastal and offshore cruising.
