Cybersecurity joins maritime connectivity services
KVH Industries has introduced two additional cybersecurity packages, Endpoint Secure and Network Secure, for its CommBox Edge Pro platform. The company announced their availability on 8 October 2026 to commercial and leisure vessels, positioning the upgrades as a way to protect onboard workstations and networks without requiring a completely separate appliance.
The platform, previously marketed as Edge 6, already supports multiple network connections and firewall functions. The new options are subscription upgrades, meaning owners should understand both the initial equipment arrangement and the recurring service obligations.
Endpoint Secure protects individual devices
Endpoint Secure focuses on onboard computers and other supported workstations. Its announced capabilities include endpoint detection and response, automated rollback, inventory of hardware and software, vulnerability scanning and patch management across operating systems and more than 600 third-party applications.
Such capabilities address the reality that crew computers and guest devices may be used for email, file transfers and software that has not been updated regularly. The presence of an endpoint tool does not guarantee protection from every attack, particularly when user access or credentials are poorly controlled.
Network Secure extends protection
Network Secure includes the endpoint package and adds intrusion detection and prevention alongside DNS-layer filtering. These functions are intended to help identify suspicious traffic and reduce access to known malicious destinations before data reaches an onboard device.
A yacht's network may combine navigation-related systems, crew operations and guest entertainment, creating different levels of sensitivity. Good design separates those functions appropriately, rather than assuming that a single filter makes every connected component safe.
Over-the-air updates and operational control
KVH says both packages can be activated for new or existing CommBox Edge Pro customers through over-the-air subscription upgrades. This may simplify rollout for vessels operating away from their home service base, although reliable communications and proper authorisation remain necessary.
Owners should establish what changes during an update, who approves it and whether a service interruption is expected. An upgrade process needs clear logging and recovery arrangements, especially if the same communications appliance supports essential operational tasks.
Managed services versus owner-managed systems
The company also offers a path to managed IT services for operators needing custom policies, compliance reporting or round-the-clock monitoring. Such an arrangement can suit a yacht with a professional management organisation, while smaller privately operated vessels may prefer more limited support.
Outsourcing monitoring does not transfer all cybersecurity responsibility to a vendor. Owners must still manage passwords, authorised accounts, physical access and the personal data handled by the yacht's systems.
What yacht owners should verify
Owners of 12–23.99-metre yachts increasingly use internet connections for entertainment, remote work and equipment diagnostics. A cybersecurity review should map devices, access privileges and the systems that must remain operational during network outages.
The October product announcement establishes additional security capabilities within KVH's platform. Whether those packages are suitable for an individual boat depends on its existing hardware, licensing, operating profile and the competence of the installation team.
Security planning and crew routines
Even sophisticated protective software can be undermined by shared passwords or poorly controlled remote access. The yacht should maintain separate user accounts and review who has access when staff, technicians or management companies change.
Owners planning extended international travel may need secure support arrangements across time zones. The service contract should describe escalation procedures, incident reporting and what happens during a loss of satellite or cellular connectivity.
