Knysna Yacht Company is preparing the new Knysna 550 for its first public appearance at the Annapolis Sailboat Show from 15 to 18 October 2026. The South African builder describes the 55-foot model as a long-range bluewater catamaran developed with VDS Marine Design and shaped by more than two decades of multihull construction.
The model has already been shortlisted for World Multihull of the Year 2026 and named among the nominees for Cruising World’s 2027 Boat of the Year programme. Annapolis will be the first opportunity for the wider public to step aboard the production yacht rather than assess the project through drawings and promotional material.
Two versions target different cruising priorities
Knysna is offering the 550 in two principal configurations: the 550SL Sky Lounge and the 550SE Solar Explorer. The SL places greater emphasis on an elevated leisure area, while the SE allocates more space to additional solar capacity and equipment for extended self-sufficient cruising.
Both versions retain the same broad long-distance brief, but the distinction allows owners to choose between different priorities without moving to another hull platform. That can simplify customisation while still giving the yard room to tailor interiors, energy systems and onboard equipment around the intended cruising programme.
Bluewater structure sits beneath the luxury fit-out
The builder says the 550 uses infused structural construction and was engineered for offshore stability as well as comfort. For a 55-foot catamaran, structural stiffness, weight control and the distribution of cruising loads are central to maintaining predictable sailing behaviour once stores, equipment and owner options are added.
Luxury appointments are therefore only one part of the package. Owners planning ocean passages also need usable working spaces, dependable systems, sufficient payload and practical access for maintenance far from a home marina.
Annapolis is a logical launch market
Annapolis remains one of the most important sailing-yacht shows in North America, particularly for multihulls and long-range cruising designs. Bringing the 550 there gives Knysna direct access to buyers who are already familiar with the demands of offshore passagemaking and liveaboard ownership.
The timing also places the model in front of the market ahead of the 2027 cruising season. Buyers considering a new-build catamaran can assess the yacht in person while discussing production slots, specifications and the differences between the two versions with the yard.
Knysna moves further into the larger cruising-catamaran segment
At 55 feet, the 550 sits above many owner-operated cruising catamarans while remaining well below superyacht scale. That makes it relevant to owners seeking more accommodation and range without necessarily adopting the operating model of a fully crewed yacht.
The public debut will be an important test of how the market responds to that positioning. For Luxury Yacht Guide, the model is a significant addition to the 12-to-23.99-metre production sector because it combines semi-custom choices with a defined production platform and a clear offshore mission.
