The post-pandemic surge has largely worked through the market

The extraordinary buying wave that followed the pandemic pulled demand forward across many recreational-boating categories. As that effect fades, the market is returning to a pattern closer to historic levels, with buyers taking more time and comparing products more carefully.

For LYG builders, that means sales can no longer rely on scarcity alone. Product quality, dealer support, financing and clear ownership costs become more important when customers feel less pressure to secure whatever inventory is available.

Recovery remains different across boat categories

Industry performance is not uniform because smaller open boats, RIBs and entry-level products have faced different pressures from larger yachts. Consumer confidence and financing costs affect these segments more directly, while wealthier buyers may continue spending through broader economic uncertainty.

The 12- to 24-metre market sits between those extremes. Buyers often have substantial discretionary resources, but they still compare annual running costs, berth expenses and resale prospects carefully before committing to a new yacht.

Growing the owner base is becoming a strategic priority

Italian industry initiatives are increasingly focused on introducing younger people and first-time users to boating. The logic is straightforward: the long-term health of larger yacht categories depends partly on owners progressing through smaller craft before moving into more complex vessels.

That progression also creates experienced buyers who understand maintenance, navigation and marina life before stepping into luxury yachts. Builders benefit when customers move up through the market rather than entering at a size that may feel overwhelming.

Genoa is being used to support that wider funnel

The 2026 show includes initiatives aimed at younger visitors and new boaters alongside the larger-yacht displays. This gives the event a broader role than simply selling expensive new models to established owners.

For the luxury segment, a healthy entry market matters because it sustains marinas, dealers, service companies and skills across the whole industry. A stronger base of active boaters ultimately supports the infrastructure that larger-yacht owners also depend on.
