Intellian has commercially launched the C100M GMDSS system, extending its Iridium Certus safety-communications range with a compact terminal designed around the Certus 100 service tier. The new model joins the C200M and C700, giving Intellian a dedicated terminal across all three Iridium Certus GMDSS service levels.
The C100M has received both MED Wheelmark and UK Marine Equipment Regulations Red Ensign approvals. Intellian is positioning it as a smaller alternative for vessels that need certified L-band distress and safety communications without the space requirements of a larger communications installation.
A compact architecture reduces installation complexity
The system combines the below-deck electronics and user terminal functions into a single Safety Control Unit, reducing the number of separate components that have to be installed at the bridge. A seven-inch colour touchscreen provides the primary user interface and includes day, dusk and night display themes.
Compact hardware is especially useful on smaller commercial vessels and larger yachts where bridge space is already occupied by navigation, monitoring and communication equipment. Fewer boxes can also simplify cable routing and make later replacement easier.
Existing antenna cabling may be reusable
Intellian says the C100M supports both coaxial and NMEA 2000 antenna-cable arrangements and can reuse suitable existing satcom GMDSS cabling. That can reduce the amount of structural work required during a retrofit because installers may not need to pull a completely new cable through the vessel.
A retrofit plate is also available to cover the console cut-out left by the system being replaced. These details matter because labour and access can cost more than the electronics themselves when a yacht’s interior panels and cable routes have to be opened.
Distress alert and safety voice are combined
The C100M brings distress alerting, safety voice and Maritime Safety Information into one Iridium-based platform. Pressing the distress control sends an alert to the relevant Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre and the system can then initiate a voice call so the watchkeeper can speak directly with rescue authorities.
Intellian also supports integration with Bridge Alert Management and bridge-navigation networks including ECDIS. For operators, a safety system is most useful when its alarms and status information fit into established bridge procedures instead of creating a separate workflow during an emergency.
The launch completes a three-tier portfolio
With C100M, C200M and C700 systems, Intellian now covers the full Iridium Certus GMDSS service range with dedicated hardware. That gives shipyards and operators a common supplier option as vessel size and bandwidth requirements change.
For luxury-yacht applications, certified GMDSS hardware becomes relevant on larger internationally operated vessels and commercial-coded yachts. The C100M is notable because it brings the safety functions into a physically smaller package that can be easier to retrofit into an existing bridge.
