Grand Soleil 52 Race Black Pekoe 3 has finished second in ORC 0 at the 2026 Loro Piana Giraglia, extending a strong season after taking victory at the Tre Golfi. The result came in light and tactically difficult conditions, giving the production performance cruiser another competitive reference point against yachts with more specialised racing configurations.
Grand Soleil says eight yachts from the brand competed in the event, one of the Mediterranean's best-known offshore races. That wider participation matters alongside the podium result because it shows an active owner fleet using the boats in demanding competition rather than relying on a single factory-backed campaign.
Light wind made efficiency and tactics decisive
The 2026 Giraglia was characterised by particularly light and complex conditions. Black Pekoe 3 owner Ernesto Folli said he was impressed by how responsive the yacht remained in only two to three knots of wind, having already understood its performance in more moderate breeze.
Light-air offshore racing can expose a boat quickly because crews have less power available to overcome drag and poor trim. Small differences in sail shape, steering, weight distribution and tactical positioning become magnified, so a strong result in those conditions provides a different test from heavy-weather speed.
A race-oriented yacht still configured for cruising
Folli emphasised that Black Pekoe 3 retains equipment and displacement associated with family and cruising use rather than being stripped into a pure race boat. He contrasted that with competitors built more specifically around performance and praised the balance achieved by the yard and naval architect Matteo Polli.
That balance is central to the Grand Soleil 52 Race proposition. Owners in this category want credible offshore speed but may still expect comfortable interiors, cruising systems and the ability to use the yacht with family after the racing calendar ends.
Tre Golfi and Giraglia create a broader performance record
The second place follows Black Pekoe 3's win at the 2026 Tre Golfi, giving the boat strong results across more than one event and set of conditions. Repeated performance is more informative than a single exceptional race because it reduces the chance that one result depended entirely on a favourable weather pattern or rating circumstance.
For Grand Soleil, the sequence also supports the 52 Race as an established production concept rather than a one-event promotional project. Owners considering the model can look at how an actual privately campaigned yacht performs over a season while still retaining the cruising features that define the design brief.
Eight Grand Soleil yachts reinforce the owner community
The builder says eight of its yachts entered the Giraglia, creating a visible presence across the fleet.
