Three regulated safety functions move into one terminal
Furuno has introduced the SOLION-100, a new satellite safety terminal built around Iridium Certus 100 connectivity. The unit combines Global Maritime Distress and Safety System communications with Ship Security Alert System and Long-Range Identification and Tracking functions, reducing the number of separate devices required for those roles.
The terminal is intended for both newbuild and retrofit installations. Furuno and Iridium say retrofit availability is expected in late 2026, with newbuild applications following in 2027, giving yards and owners a new option when modernising regulated satellite safety communications.
Iridium adds polar coverage to GMDSS
Iridium’s GMDSS service uses the company’s low-Earth-orbit satellite network and includes coverage in polar regions. The system supports navigational and meteorological warnings through SafetyCast, distress alerting and Safety Voice communications with rescue coordination centres.
For expedition and long-range yachts, global coverage is particularly relevant when routes extend beyond conventional geostationary satellite footprints. Although carriage requirements depend on vessel size, flag and operating area, the technology also illustrates the direction in which integrated safety communications are developing.
Single-button distress alerting remains central
During an emergency, an Iridium GMDSS distress alert can transmit vessel identification, status and position before voice contact is established. Safety Voice then allows the crew to speak directly with rescue authorities and provide additional information as the incident develops.
Combining that capability with SSAS and LRIT in the same platform simplifies the bridge equipment package and can reduce duplicated antennas, interfaces and maintenance points. Integration is increasingly important as yacht bridges carry more navigation, communications and monitoring systems in limited console space.
Furuno broadens its safety communications portfolio
The SOLION-100 adds Iridium GMDSS to Furuno’s existing marine electronics range, which already spans radar, navigation, communications and bridge systems. Its introduction gives shipyards and refit teams another route to integrate satellite distress communications alongside familiar Furuno equipment.
While the system is aimed at regulated maritime applications rather than every leisure yacht, the underlying shift toward consolidated safety functions is relevant across the sector. Larger private yachts, expedition craft and commercially operated vessels are likely to be the most immediate market for the new terminal.
