BlueWater Marinas and Bain Capital have acquired Mystic River Marina in Connecticut and Ripley Light Drystack Marina in Charleston, South Carolina. The two September transactions are the sixth and seventh marina acquisitions made by the partners' joint venture.
The properties serve different boating markets, making the pair a broader infrastructure story than a simple increase in berth count. Mystic River is a full-service destination with large wet slips and winter storage, while Ripley Light specialises in dry storage and rapid access to Charleston Harbor.
A long-established home port in Mystic
Mystic River Marina is located on Mason's Island and has roots dating to 1957, when members of the Garbarino family began developing the site. The family maintained its involvement over four generations before the new acquisition.
The property's approximately 145 wet slips, fuel dock, service department, brokerage and winter dry storage are particularly relevant to cruising owners. The official acquisition announcement says BlueWater intends to preserve its established service identity.
Charleston adds drystack capacity
Ripley Light has served Charleston-area boaters since 1988 and provides 220 dry-storage positions for boats up to 40 feet. Its valet-style launch service, fuel, boat club and repair facilities support a smaller-boat market distinct from Mystic's larger wet berths.
The upper storage length is close to LYG's 12-metre threshold, but many of its customers fall in the Leisure Boat Guide segment. The significance to LYG is therefore the wider marina ownership and service platform.
A partnership focused on coastal assets
BlueWater was formed by marine executives with previous marina-development and management experience, while Bain Capital Real Estate supplies investment capacity. The group is targeting established East Coast boating markets where new marina supply is difficult to develop.
The companies have not disclosed the purchase price of either transaction. Any broader valuation, future tariff or capital-expenditure figure would be speculative without further announcement.
What boat owners should watch
For existing customers, the relevant questions include continuity of service teams, berth availability and planned facility improvements. The acquisition release commits to investing in customer experience but does not announce immediate changes to individual dockage contracts.
Owners using Mystic or Charleston should confirm their own arrangements directly with the marina. LYG will report any specific upgrades or service changes separately when official details are published.
