German builder YYachts has introduced the new Y6 at Cannes as a 65-foot sailing yacht created specifically around easy handling and owner independence. The yacht measures approximately 19.65 metres overall, extending to about 21.42 metres with its bowsprit, and remains firmly inside the under-24-metre category.

Naval architecture is by Bill Tripp, while the interior brings together YYachts’ design team led by Francesca Modica and Danish architect David Thulstrup. Carbon-epoxy construction keeps displacement to roughly 28.5 tonnes in standard light-ship condition and supports the yard’s emphasis on sailing performance in lighter wind.

Control is led back to the helms

The Y6 is designed so halyards and sheets lead aft to the wheel pedestals, reducing the amount of movement required on deck during normal manoeuvres. A self-tacking jib and integrated control systems support the same aim, allowing a couple or even a solo owner to manage the yacht without a large permanent sailing crew.

Easy handling is not the same as automatic sailing, and a yacht of almost 20 metres still demands experience and careful passage planning. YYachts is nevertheless reducing the number of separate manual stations so that competent owners can remain directly involved rather than delegating every manoeuvre.

Carbon epoxy keeps weight under control

The yacht is built in advanced carbon epoxy, a construction method YYachts uses across its range. The published light-ship displacement is about 28.5 tonnes, supported by a fixed-keel ballast figure around 8.6 tonnes and a generous sail plan including a 160-square-metre mainsail.

Low structural weight helps the yacht accelerate in light air and reduces the power needed to maintain sailing speed. It also gives the designers more freedom to add owner-specific interior finish without allowing decorative weight to erase the performance benefit built into the hull.

Four interior themes, many layouts

The Y6 offers Milano, Baltic, Sugi Ban and Glacier interior concepts developed by Thulstrup and the YYachts design team. Each uses a different palette and material approach, but the underlying layouts remain highly configurable with three or four cabins, office alternatives, crew accommodation and several owner-suite variations.

That level of choice is unusual in the 60–65-foot production sector, where fixed mouldings often limit changes. YYachts is using carbon construction and semi-custom building methods to make the Y6 behave more like a small custom yacht while retaining a repeatable platform.

A 110 hp Yanmar is standard

Standard auxiliary power comes from a 110 hp Yanmar 4JH110 saildrive, with a 150 hp 4LV option. Fuel and fresh-water capacity are each around 800 litres, while fixed and shallow-draft keel alternatives allow owners to match the yacht to deeper offshore routes or cruising areas where marina and anchorage depth is more restrictive.

The propulsion system is deliberately secondary to the sailing brief, but reliable manoeuvring power remains essential for a yacht designed to be operated by a small crew. An integrated bow thruster is part of the same strategy of reducing workload in confined harbours.

The Y6 makes the ‘small superyacht’ case

YYachts describes the concept as ‘superyacht simplified to 65 feet’, a phrase that captures the central proposition. The boat aims to give owners the material quality, interior tailoring and carbon construction associated with much larger sailing yachts without requiring the same crew structure or operating footprint.

Cannes is the first public test of that claim. Buyers can now judge whether the space, finish and handling systems deliver the promised independence in a yacht that remains compact enough for direct private involvement and far below the 24-metre regulatory threshold.

Short-handed sailing is the real luxury proposition

The Y6's most distinctive promise is not simply carbon construction or interior finish but the ability for a very small crew to control a yacht approaching 20 metres. Bringing sail controls aft, using a self-tacking jib and integrating manoeuvring systems can reduce physical workload while allowing an experienced owner to remain personally involved in sailing rather than operating the yacht as a passenger.

That independence has financial and lifestyle consequences. A yacht that can be used confidently by a couple may not require the same permanent crew structure as a larger sailing yacht, and spontaneous short trips become easier when every departure does not depend on assembling a team. Cannes will show whether the deck ergonomics make that claim feel natural when prospective owners actually stand at the helms and trace the control layout.
