AutoCaptain targets the hardest low-speed manoeuvres

Docking and undocking are among the most stressful parts of operating a yacht, particularly in crowded marinas or changing wind and current. Simrad AutoCaptain is designed to assist those low-speed manoeuvres by combining sensors, control software and real-time situational awareness around the vessel.

The system does not remove the captain from the process. Instead, it provides support during the most precise movements, helping reduce workload while allowing the operator to supervise and intervene as required.

The system builds a 360-degree view around the yacht

AutoCaptain uses surrounding sensor data to create a 360-degree picture of the vessel’s immediate environment. That information can be used to identify nearby docks, boats and other obstacles during close-quarters handling.

For owner-operators, better awareness can make a substantial difference in unfamiliar marinas. The value is greatest when visibility is restricted from the helm or when crosswinds make a berth more difficult than expected.

Saxdor is integrating the technology at builder level

Saxdor says AutoCaptain will be integrated into its range rather than treated purely as an aftermarket accessory. Factory integration allows the system to be planned alongside steering, propulsion, helm electronics and vessel architecture from the beginning.

That can improve reliability and usability because sensors, controls and software are commissioned as part of the yacht rather than added later. It also gives owners a clearer support route through the builder and authorised service network.

Genoa provided the first public demonstration

Saxdor introduced the technology at the 2026 Genoa International Boat Show in collaboration with Navico Group. The show setting gives owners, dealers and builders a chance to see how the system behaves in the type of marina environment where assisted docking is most relevant.

For the LYG market, the announcement is significant because advanced manoeuvring technology is moving rapidly from large superyachts into smaller owner-operated luxury yachts. Systems such as AutoCaptain could make increasingly sophisticated boats easier to handle without professional crew.
