Swedish waterfront works start on 12 October

Östhammar Municipality has appointed contractor Sjötek to rebuild the walkways at Öregrund harbour, with work scheduled to begin on 12 October 2026. The project carries an estimated cost of ten million Swedish kronor and is intended to replace timber access routes considered worn and increasingly unsuitable for heavy summer use.

The harbour attracts residents and visitors throughout the boating season, and the existing paths help pedestrians move around a busy waterfront without relying entirely on nearby streets. Their deterioration has raised concerns about uneven surfaces and limited accessibility.

The new route is expected to reopen in spring 2027, following demolition, foundation work and reconstruction during the autumn and winter. This is a public-access project, not a declaration of additional yacht berths or a new harbour operating company.

A three-metre walkway is proposed

The planned pedestrian route is three metres wide and will run between Brobänken and Hamnplan. The old timber construction will be removed and some foundations within the water strengthened to support the replacement.

The municipality intends to create more consistent levels along the route, add a railing on the inner side and incorporate accessible transitions at selected points. Such details are important to visitors carrying luggage, families with pushchairs and people who find uneven timber surfaces difficult to negotiate.

Work near the water requires careful coordination with moored boats, dock users and local maritime businesses. Construction materials, barriers and temporary access changes may affect the waterfront long before the completed route is available to pedestrians.

Construction will continue through winter

According to the announced schedule, demolition begins during October and replacement works proceed through October and November, with finishing work targeted for December. The public opening is nevertheless anticipated in spring 2027, allowing time for final safety checks and seasonal conditions.

The difference between finishing construction and reopening a route is relevant to boat owners considering the marina for an autumn or early-spring visit. Harbour operations may continue under local arrangements, but visitors should check access and contractor restrictions.

Even a short stop at a harbour depends on a safe connection between the vessel and the surrounding town. Improved pedestrian routes can encourage visitors to explore restaurants and shops without wandering into areas used for operational deliveries.

What visiting boaters should consider

Öregrund is an attractive waypoint for smaller motor yachts and sailing boats navigating Sweden's east coast, especially during summer cruising. The renovation may make the waterfront more comfortable for future visitors without changing the fundamental seamanship involved in approaching the harbour.

Captains should confirm berthing availability and any temporary restrictions with the harbour operator rather than assuming the work is confined to a distant promenade. The municipal notice has described walkway reconstruction, not a comprehensive refit of marina utility systems.

The photograph accompanying this report documents the real harbour rather than an artist's interpretation of completed works. The value of the project will be measured by the safety and accessibility of the finished route after the announced spring reopening.
