Headline growth hides important differences between segments

Industry revenue has continued to rise, supported by exports and high-value yacht construction, but the figures show that not every part of the market is moving in the same direction. Sailing yachts and smaller recreational craft have experienced more difficult trading conditions.

For LYG readers, that divergence matters because 12- to 24-metre buyers sit closer to the discretionary consumer market than superyacht clients. Financing costs, confidence and marina availability can influence purchase timing more directly at this level.

Exports remain one of Italy’s strongest advantages

Italian marine exports reached a new high of roughly €4.4 billion, reinforcing the importance of international demand to domestic yards and equipment suppliers. Export strength helps builders spread risk across markets rather than relying only on European buyers.

A broad geographic customer base can also support residual values because models become familiar in more brokerage markets. Owners considering a new yacht often benefit when the brand has service, dealer and resale visibility beyond the country where the boat was built.

Employment has expanded despite skills shortages

Direct industry employment has more than doubled from roughly 16,000 people in 2013 to above 32,000 today. At the same time, companies continue to report difficulty recruiting skilled technical and manual workers for production and service roles.

Labour constraints can affect delivery schedules, refit availability and after-sales support even when order demand remains healthy. Buyers therefore need to look beyond a builder’s sales pipeline and consider whether the service network has enough trained people to support yachts after handover.

The next recovery may depend on bringing new owners into boating

Industry representatives are increasingly focused on broadening participation and rebuilding demand below the superyacht segment. Medium-size yachts rely on a steady flow of owners moving up from smaller boats as well as experienced clients replacing existing vessels.

For builders, that makes product accessibility important alongside luxury. Easier handling, efficient engines, clearer operating costs and stronger dealer support can influence whether buyers remain active in the market when economic conditions become less predictable.
