GranOcean has officially opened a new 300,000-square-foot production facility in the Jinwan District of Zhuhai, expanding capacity for its semi-custom W-Series and fully custom X-Series power catamarans. The builder says the facility is powered entirely by a large-scale solar-energy system, linking the increase in output with a lower-carbon approach to production energy.
The move comes as GranOcean broadens international distribution and delivers more W-Series yachts into the United States and Europe. Additional production space also supports larger custom projects, including the 32-metre carbon-fibre X-32 currently under construction.
More capacity for W-Series production
The W-Series currently includes the W-60 and W-72, both positioned as semi-custom power catamarans with owner-selectable layouts and finish packages. A larger factory gives GranOcean more room to build several hulls and interior packages in parallel while maintaining the separation needed for customised work.
For buyers, greater capacity can reduce one of the risks associated with a growing boutique builder: production bottlenecks as order volume rises. The real test will be whether the expanded facility also increases quality-control resources, commissioning space and supplier coordination rather than simply allowing more boats to enter production.
Solar power targets the manufacturing footprint
GranOcean says the Zhuhai facility is powered entirely by a large-scale solar-energy installation. Yacht construction still carries substantial embedded emissions through composites, metals, transport and purchased equipment, but reducing grid electricity from fossil sources can lower one part of the manufacturing footprint.
The significance is therefore practical rather than symbolic if the solar system genuinely covers day-to-day factory demand. It also gives the company an opportunity to track production-energy use more transparently as buyers and regulators become more interested in the environmental impact of construction as well as fuel consumption after delivery.
The X-Series needs larger technical capability
GranOcean’s fully custom X-Series extends from 24 to 32 metres, beyond the normal Luxury Yacht Guide coverage threshold, but its production requirements influence the same yard building the smaller W-Series. The company says the expanded facility provides the scale and technical capability needed for projects such as the all-carbon X-32 while increasing capacity across the wider range.
Large custom projects can push a yard to invest in engineering, tooling and quality systems that later benefit smaller models as well. Conversely, they can also absorb management attention and specialist labour, so buyers of W-Series yachts will want to see whether GranOcean keeps production schedules and after-sales support strong as the custom programme grows.
Zhuhai becomes a more important base for the brand
The new plant strengthens GranOcean’s roots in Zhuhai at the same time that the sales footprint is becoming more international. European premieres, Mediterranean deliveries and a growing US presence mean the production centre increasingly has to support owners and dealer networks far from China.
That makes logistics, spares and service documentation as important as factory output itself. The solar-powered facility is a visible milestone, but GranOcean’s next stage will be judged by whether the added capacity translates into consistent build quality, predictable deliveries and reliable support across the markets where its yachts are now operating.
