A link between rescue and dive medicine
Garmin and Divers Alert Network have announced a collaboration intended to connect satellite SOS coordination with specialist support during diving emergencies. The 9 September 2026 announcement allows active DAN members to add their member ID to the Emergency Notes field of an inReach account, enabling the Garmin Response team to share the information when assisting in an emergency.
For owners and crew of 12–23.99-metre yachts carrying diving equipment, the development concerns the transition from an emergency call to appropriate support. It does not make a yacht self-sufficient in an emergency or replace established dive and vessel safety procedures.
What happens after an SOS
An inReach user must have an active satellite service plan and a suitable device, with Garmin citing a Mini 3 Plus in a dive case as one example for use from the surface. When the user initiates SOS, Garmin Response coordinates communications with emergency contacts, relevant local resources and search-and-rescue organisations.
If the account contains the member information and DAN membership remains active, the response team can pass relevant details to DAN. The collaboration does not mean an underwater satellite transmission is possible or that an alert bypasses the need for local rescue services.
Where DAN contributes
DAN's team can provide specialist dive-medicine consultation and help identify medical or hyperbaric facilities as a diver moves into appropriate care. Depending on the member's actual benefits and available resources, additional assistance may include support with transport or evacuation logistics.
Those services are subject to membership, coverage and local conditions, so they should not be represented as automatic medical or insurance entitlements. The published arrangement is about communication and coordination between established organisations.
Practical checks before heading offshore
Divers should confirm device use, satellite subscription, account details, emergency contacts and applicable local rules before a trip. A yacht's plan also needs crew familiar with emergency procedures, communications alternatives and the equipment used for dive activity.
