The Frauscher x Porsche 790 Spectre has set a new YCM Speed Record at the 2026 Monaco Energy Boat Challenge, recording an average of 51.05 knots. The result improves on the 49.84-knot benchmark established a year earlier by the Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom and gives the smaller 790 a high-profile demonstration of its electric performance.
The 7.92-metre boat was engineered around powertrain technology derived from the Porsche Macan Turbo. Frauscher and Porsche are using the project to show that electric propulsion can deliver more than silent harbour running, although record speed is only one part of the ownership equation for a battery-powered performance boat.
The 790 Spectre was designed around the electric drivetrain
Rather than adapting a completed petrol hull around batteries and an electric motor, the 790 Spectre was developed with the drivetrain as a central design constraint. Published specifications include 170kW of continuous power and 400kW peak output, with four drive modes ranging from low-speed docking to Sport Plus.
That integration matters because battery position, cooling and weight distribution all affect how a fast boat handles. The model has a listed weight of about 2,600kg, so designers have had to balance a substantial 100kWh battery with the structure and hull geometry needed for rapid acceleration and high-speed control.
A 100kWh battery supports both performance and range
The lithium battery is rated at 100kWh, and the builders publish more than 100 kilometres of range at displacement speed. At a faster 22-knot cruise, the stated range is 45 kilometres, illustrating how sharply energy demand rises as speed increases on a planing boat.
Those two figures are more useful together than either is alone because they show the central trade-off of electric performance boating. Owners can travel surprisingly far if they slow down, but sustained high speed uses stored energy quickly, making route planning and access to charging infrastructure an important part of normal use.
Rapid charging is intended to shorten turnaround time
The 790 Spectre supports charging above 250kW and Frauscher x Porsche state that the battery can move from 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes where suitable infrastructure is available. That kind of charging rate can make repeated day use far more practical than an overnight-only charging strategy.
The limitation is that marina charging networks do not yet offer high-power DC connections everywhere. A buyer needs to distinguish between what the boat can accept and what their home marina or cruising destinations can supply, because a 250kW-capable onboard system cannot shorten charging time if the shore connection is much smaller.
The record is an engineering test as well as publicity
Speed records attract attention, but they also place heavy thermal and electrical loads on the powertrain. Holding repeated high-output runs gives engineers data on battery temperature, inverter behaviour, motor cooling and the way the hull responds as power is delivered continuously rather than in a short acceleration demonstration.
That information can feed back into production boats even for owners who never attempt 50 knots. Reliable cooling, software limits and predictable power delivery are valuable at ordinary speeds because they help protect components and make performance repeatable instead of depending on ideal battery temperature or a narrow state-of-charge window.
Electric performance changes the sound and feel of speed
A powerful electric boat delivers acceleration without the exhaust note and vibration associated with large combustion engines. That changes the sensory character of a fast run, putting more emphasis on wind, hull noise and water impact while allowing passengers to communicate more easily at lower speeds.
It also creates new feedback requirements for the driver. Without engine sound rising in the familiar way, clear instrumentation for speed, battery state, temperature and remaining range becomes more important, especially when the boat can consume a large amount of energy in a short high-performance session.
The next benchmark is everyday ownership
The Monaco result demonstrates that the 790 Spectre can deliver genuine speed, but the commercial test is broader. Owners will judge charging access, battery ageing, winter storage, service support and resale confidence alongside the excitement of instant torque and a record-setting top-end capability.
Frauscher and Porsche now have two consecutive Monaco records from different models, giving the collaboration a growing body of public performance evidence. If the same engineering proves durable through ordinary seasons of use, the 790 Spectre will be more significant as a production electric boat than as a one-day record holder.
