New sailmaking operation established in Newport
Elvstrøm Sails has launched a new North American operation, with headquarters and a sail loft established in the Newport, Rhode Island area. The Danish company says the move will strengthen its sales and technical support for sailors throughout the United States and Canada.
The business started operations in September and announced the new structure in October 2026. Its strategy combines products developed by the longstanding European sailmaker with local consultation and service capabilities.
Full sail portfolio planned for the market
The new operation is expected to provide the company's complete sail range, including cruising, performance and spread-filament composite designs. Elvstrøm notes that its portfolio spans several sailmaking technologies, allowing owners to compare constructions for different sailing priorities.
A sailmaker must account for the specific rig and how the owner actually uses the yacht. Offshore cruising, recreational coastal trips and competitive racing can each place different demands on materials, shape retention and repairability.
Local team brings experience to the business
Elvstrøm Sails North America identifies Tim Healy as chief executive and Rodrigo Meireles as its chief product and operations officer. The wider team includes finance, marketing and consulting staff with experience in competitive sailing and marine services.
An experienced local team can help arrange measurements, installations and support without requiring every interaction to take place across the Atlantic. The company still needs to demonstrate the availability and turnaround times of individual products as the new operation develops.
Sail choice affects more than speed
For a 12-to-24-metre sailing yacht, sail selection can influence handling loads, crew requirements, long-distance durability and storage. Materials optimised for short races may not be the most practical choice for extended owner cruising.
Customers should consider expected weather, rig geometry, reefing arrangements and available winch power before selecting a sail design. A brand's broad portfolio can be helpful, but no one laminate or construction is ideal for every boat.
Next stage for North American customers
The announcement confirms the operational launch and the Newport base, rather than any particular new sail model or a confirmed increase in market share. The focus is on distribution, customer contact and technical service.
Owners can approach the new team through the official North American website to discuss their individual requirements. Subsequent expansion or production commitments should be reported when the company provides verified information.
