Boating-market sentiment is rarely captured well by one number. Search activity, event attendance, actual time on the water and consumer interest can move in different directions, which is why the latest Discover Boating Health Score Index is more useful as a collection of signals than as a simple verdict on the market.

For August 2026, the HSI registered 74% against an August 2024 baseline fixed at 100%. That was nine points lower than July and two points below the comparable year-earlier reading, but the underlying campaign tests produced a more mixed picture than the headline score suggests.

Media testing produced measurable gains in activity

Across its spring and summer Test & Learn programme, Discover Boating says campaign activity generated a 5% increase in boating-related search behaviour. It also attributes approximately three million incremental on-water visits to the tested media effort.

Website visitors and so-called Hand Raisers grew at more than twice the rate seen in markets where Discover Boating media was not active. Those results suggest that targeted marketing can still move people deeper into the category even when broader consumer momentum remains uneven.

The August index still points to softer momentum

The HSI remained well below its 2024 benchmark and weakened month on month. Search trends were below benchmark despite improving from June, while rolling boat-show attendance remained soft.

That combination matters for builders and dealers because interest does not automatically become a sale. Luxury-yacht purchases have long consideration periods, so weaker event traffic or search intensity can take time to show up in order books.

The methodology still needs to be read with caution

NMMA notes that 2026 is the first full year of the Health Score Index framework. Parts of the 2024 and 2025 historical baselines were estimated, which means current year-on-year comparisons should be treated as directional rather than as perfectly like-for-like measurements.

That caveat is important when reading small changes in the index. The value of the HSI is likely to improve from 2027 onward, when comparisons can use a more consistent methodology across complete years.

The industry is using the findings to adjust future campaigns

Discover Boating says the Test & Learn findings are already feeding into its 2027 market-expansion strategy and into targeting, creative and conversion work for Norwalk and the winter boat-show season. In other words, the measurement is being used to change activity rather than simply report it.

For the luxury-yacht market, the message is nuanced. Consumer attention remains available, but converting that attention will require more precise targeting and a clearer ownership proposition at a time when buyers are still highly selective.
