An evolution rather than a clean-sheet replacement
Contest developed the 56CS as the successor to its European Yacht of the Year-winning 55CS, deliberately retaining the qualities that made the earlier design successful instead of replacing them wholesale. The new 18-metre model was presented for 2026 with its world premiere at boot Düsseldorf.
The design continues Contest’s collaboration with judel/vrolijk & co for naval architecture, Wetzels Brown for interiors and Lloyd’s Register for quality surveillance. That combination keeps the yacht centred on offshore capability while allowing the yard to update the spaces owners interact with most frequently.
More emphasis on accommodation and everyday use
Contest says the 56CS responds to owners placing greater importance on interior volume, home-like comfort and visual refinement. The changes are intended to improve accommodation without undermining sailing performance, safety or the practical deck arrangements expected on a long-distance cruising yacht.
The interior remains configurable around different owner requirements, while larger windows and carefully integrated furniture help create a lighter living environment below. Rather than chasing maximum cabin count, the design focuses on comfortable extended use for owners who may spend weeks or months aboard.
Deck systems remain focused on short-handed sailing
The cockpit and sail-handling layout follow Contest’s established approach to manageable bluewater sailing, with controls positioned so that a small crew can operate the yacht efficiently. An optional hardtop bimini adds shelter while preserving the open sailing-cockpit character that distinguishes the CS line.
For owners moving up from a smaller performance cruiser, the 56CS therefore offers additional space without requiring a professional crew. Its size also leaves a meaningful margin below the 24m boundary, making it relevant to buyers who want serious ocean capability without moving into superyacht-scale ownership.
A familiar platform with a more current brief
The 56CS shows how established bluewater yards are refining proven hull concepts rather than treating every new model as a radical reset. Contest has used the transition from 55CS to 56CS to incorporate newer expectations around interior finish, shelter and cruising ergonomics while preserving the underlying sailing character.
That continuity may be particularly attractive to long-distance owners who value a known design philosophy and mature engineering. The new model adds a current 18m option to Contest’s range between the smaller 50CS and larger 63CS, creating a clear progression for experienced cruising sailors.
