Axopar has turned part of its Cannes stand into an engineering exhibition rather than another polished showroom. The new Hull of Fame display exposes the hull forms, scale models and design logic behind the Finnish company’s twin-stepped boats, giving visitors a way to see the structure that normally remains hidden below the waterline.
The timing reflects Axopar’s growth from its first 28-foot model in 2014 to more than 7,600 boats sold worldwide. The company argues that its expansion has been driven by starting every project with the running surface and handling targets before deciding how much accommodation or optional equipment can be placed above them.
Sharp entry, chines and twin steps become visible
The display uses physical models to show Axopar’s sharp-entry bows, pronounced forward chines, secondary chines and twin-step geometry. Screens add design material, on-water footage and measured performance information so visitors can connect individual shapes with the behaviour they feel at the helm.
This is unusually transparent for a production builder because hull development is normally discussed through simplified marketing phrases. By placing the forms at eye level, Axopar is inviting customers to ask why each surface exists rather than accepting drivability as a vague brand promise.
Hull-first means constraints above the waterline
Axopar says every feature has to earn its place without undermining balance, weight distribution or the driving sensation established by the hull. That philosophy can limit how aggressively designers add interior volume, tall superstructures or heavy luxury equipment when those features would compromise the running target.
The company frames that discipline as a response to boats designed from the top down, where marina appearance and accommodation can take priority over seakeeping. The Hull of Fame is therefore as much a statement about design order as it is a celebration of particular hull shapes.
More than 7,600 boats provide a large feedback base
Since 2014, Axopar says it has sold more than 7,600 boats and built a range spanning 22 to 45 feet, including electric AX/E derivatives. That installed fleet gives the engineering team years of owner and dealer feedback across different climates, sea states and engine packages.
Production volume does not prove every design decision is correct, but it creates a much larger operating dataset than a one-off prototype. Axopar can use warranty reports, performance measurements and repeat-owner behaviour to decide which hull characteristics should continue into the next generation.
The new 38 range shows the philosophy evolving
The latest 38 platform demonstrates how Axopar is applying the same principles to a new generation. Revised hydrodynamics, weight distribution and internal structure have been developed before the range branches into XC, Sun Top and Cross Top body styles.
That sequence supports the central claim of the exhibit: different deck experiences can share one driving foundation if the hull is established first. Owners can then choose enclosure, furniture and weather protection without moving to a completely different set of handling characteristics.
Engineering becomes part of the sales conversation
Axopar’s designers and engineers are present at Cannes to guide visitors through the display and answer questions directly. The company is effectively using education as a sales tool, betting that a buyer who understands what happens below the waterline will value engineering choices that are otherwise impossible to see at the dock.
For the wider luxury-yacht market, the exhibit is a useful reminder that interior volume and visual drama are only part of a boat’s quality. Below 24 metres, where owners often drive themselves, the hull can shape everyday satisfaction more directly than many of the features visible in a brochure.
Showing the hull makes the engineering argument testable
A physical display of running surfaces gives buyers a chance to ask more demanding questions than a normal sales presentation encourages. Chines, steps and bow sections can be examined directly, and engineers can explain which features are intended to influence lift, spray control or directional behaviour instead of relying on broad claims about superior handling.
That transparency is useful in a market where interiors and screens are far easier to compare at a boat show than underwater geometry. For owner-drivers below 24 metres, the hull often determines satisfaction every time the sea becomes uncomfortable. Axopar is effectively asking buyers to treat naval architecture as a visible part of the product, and the exhibit may help competitors face more detailed questions about their own design decisions.
