Xi Zhe Wuxi, Curio Collection by Hilton has opened in Jiangsu Province with a design built around the coexistence of past and present. The hotel brings together a restored 1933 residence and a newly constructed building, using local materials and cultural references to create a more distinctive alternative to a standard city hotel.
A historic residence anchors the project
The story begins with a 1933 home built by Wuxi entrepreneur Zhang Xiaocheng and his sister Zhang Chuquan. That original structure has been preserved and reworked alongside a new building, giving the hotel a layered architectural character rather than a single contemporary identity.
Using an existing residence as part of the hotel also gives guests a direct connection to the city’s history. Instead of displaying heritage only through artwork or decoration, Xi Zhe makes an original building part of the everyday guest experience.
Jiangnan references shape the interiors
Design details draw from medicine cabinets, palace lanterns, bamboo weaving and Jiangnan gardens. These references are interpreted in a contemporary way rather than copied literally, helping the spaces feel modern while still recognisably connected to Wuxi.
That balance is important in lifestyle hospitality, where local character can quickly become superficial if it is reduced to decoration. Xi Zhe’s stronger approach is to integrate regional forms and materials into circulation, furniture and spatial design.
The location puts culture within walking distance
The hotel sits in central Wuxi within easy reach of historic districts, temples and former residences associated with important local figures. Guests can move quickly from the property into areas such as Qingming Bridge Historical and Cultural District and Huishan Ancient Town.
For travellers, that central position reduces the friction between hotel time and city exploration. A design-led stay becomes more valuable when the surrounding neighbourhood supports the same sense of place rather than functioning only as a transport hub.
Curio Collection expands deeper into China
Xi Zhe marks Curio Collection by Hilton’s first hotel in Jiangsu Province and adds another lifestyle property to Hilton’s growing Chinese portfolio. The brand is increasingly used for hotels where local architecture and cultural identity are more important than strict visual standardisation.
For LYG readers, Xi Zhe represents a useful middle ground: polished international hospitality with strong regional character, but without the formality or pricing structure associated with the very highest tier of luxury hotels. It offers a polished city stay without drifting into the ultra-luxury tier.
