A canal cruise can be enjoyed through more than the view from its windows. The Ratho branch of Seagull Trust Cruises has launched audio-described trips with RNIB Scotland, giving guests with visual impairments a richer account of what lies alongside the water.

A more inclusive outing

The RYA’s June canal roundup highlights the project as an example of boating made more accessible through thoughtful interpretation. Narration helps guests understand changing landscapes, buildings and wildlife rather than depending entirely on what companions describe.

The project concerns particular organised cruises, not a claim that all Scottish hire boats or commercial trips now provide the same service. Anyone arranging a visit should contact the operator about dates and individual access needs.

A volunteer-led cruising tradition

Seagull Trust Cruises provides free barge outings for older people and people with additional needs, operating nine boats across Scotland’s canal network. Volunteers are central to its service and help make a day on the water possible for groups who may not otherwise travel afloat.

Free trips are part of a charitable service and must be arranged through the trust; they should not be mistaken for open-ended private charter availability. Accessibility features and embarkation arrangements vary by vessel and branch.

An alternative shore excursion

For a yacht household visiting Scotland, an organised inland trip can bring a different perspective from coastal cruising. A canal’s slower pace offers time to notice engineering, local history and the details of waterside communities.

Ratho is an inland location, not a yacht marina or sea-going destination. Visitors need a separate road transfer from the coast and should plan the day around the operator’s boarding point.
