IHG Hotels & Resorts is expanding Vignette Collection in Spain with San Bernardo, a 67-room hotel planned for central Madrid. The project will transform a partially protected heritage office building on Calle de San Bernardo into a lifestyle property with courtyard dining, lounge spaces and a more residential design approach.

A heritage building becomes the starting point

The hotel will occupy a partially protected building, allowing the project to preserve key architectural elements while introducing new rooms and public spaces. That gives San Bernardo a stronger sense of place than a purpose-built hotel with no connection to the surrounding streetscape.

For travellers, this type of conversion can make a city stay feel more specific to the destination. The architecture itself becomes part of the experience rather than merely containing a standard room product.

Sixty-seven rooms keep the property intimate

With 67 rooms, San Bernardo will remain relatively small compared with many international city hotels. That scale should support a more personal atmosphere and reduce the anonymous feel that can come with very large urban properties.

The size also suits the Vignette Collection model, which is built around independent character within a global distribution system. Guests get the reassurance of IHG while the hotel retains its own visual identity.

Courtyard dining adds a social centre

Plans include an internal courtyard, all-day dining, a lounge and bar, and fitness facilities. The courtyard should be particularly important in Madrid, where outdoor and semi-outdoor social spaces can extend the life of the hotel well into the evening.

These amenities are not extravagant, but they are well matched to the way many travellers use a city hotel. Good food, a comfortable bar and somewhere attractive to sit often matter more than an oversized spa or resort-style facilities.

Madrid continues to attract lifestyle brands

The signing adds another international lifestyle property to a city already seeing strong hotel investment. Madrid combines year-round business demand with a growing leisure market, making it attractive to brands that sit between traditional luxury and design-led premium hospitality.

For LYG readers, San Bernardo should offer the kind of high-luxury city stay that feels distinctive without becoming excessively formal. Its central location and smaller scale are likely to be the main advantages.
