IWC's August special edition uses the Big Pilot format to mark 140 years since the early automobile story that led to Mercedes-Benz. Its Big Pilot's Watch Perpetual Calendar ProSet 140 Years Mercedes-Benz is limited to 140 pieces.
The watch is a collectible interpretation of a longstanding partnership, not a new vehicle accessory or piece of marine equipment. Its place in a yacht owner's wardrobe is as a mechanical object with a strong design story.
A calendar that can go backwards
The ProSet mechanism lets the wearer adjust the perpetual calendar forward or backward from a single crown position. That is a notable change from calendar systems requiring multiple correction controls and particular adjustment sequences.
IWC says the module is based on gears and protected by four patents, with elaborate manufacturing behind the simplified operation. The owner should still follow official setting and servicing instructions instead of experimenting under load.
The historical details
A 42-millimetre stainless-steel case frames a black dial with gold details, while a historical Daimler and Benz emblem appears on the transparent case back. The chosen logo points back to the companies' 1926 combination as well as the anniversary theme.
The special edition therefore tells a longer history than a contemporary racing livery could convey. It builds on IWC's partnership with Mercedes-AMG and other performance-related projects without claiming the watch was developed for use at sea.
Engineering for the wrist
IWC introduced a different calendar-setting approach through a complication whose apparent simplicity masks intricate geometry. Mechanical functionality forms the centre of this release rather than merely placing a partner logo on an existing dial.
The watch is still a luxury timepiece rather than an essential item for passage planning. Accurate navigation and distress communication belong to the yacht's approved systems.
A considered travelling companion
A mechanical calendar can be a pleasure on trips between time zones, but a watch's display must still be set according to its manual. Salt, impact and moisture ratings also deserve attention when moving between tender, deck and shore.
