Two engineering stories meet in IWC’s Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar ProSet 140 Years Mercedes-Benz. Announced in August, the 140-piece edition marks the anniversary of the automobile with a new calendar-setting design and a caseback recalling the history of two pioneering marques.
A new approach to calendar adjustment
IWC describes ProSet as its first perpetual calendar that can be adjusted both forward and backward from a single crown position. The mechanism aims to make a complex display easier to use while preserving the mechanical character of a traditional high-complication watch.
As with any perpetual calendar, an owner should follow the manufacturer’s operation instructions rather than force a setting. A premium mechanical timepiece does not replace the navigation and timekeeping instruments required aboard a yacht.
A restrained black-and-gold design
The watch uses a 42mm stainless steel case with a black dial, solid-gold appliqués and gold-plated hands. The caseback carries a historic mark commemorating the 1926 union of Daimler Motoren-Gesellschaft and Benz & Cie., set within the broader 140-year story.
The special edition references Mercedes-Benz through materials and detail rather than a bright racing livery. For a traveller, fit, legibility and comfort remain more personal considerations than the numbered case alone.
The limited-edition proposition
IWC says only 140 examples will be made, one for each anniversary year. The number describes the edition size rather than future collectible value, and availability will depend on the authorised retail channel.
A buyer should ask for warranty documentation, service information and current price before committing. Mechanical maintenance and insurance are relevant ownership costs even if the watch is worn only on selected occasions.
From road to marina wardrobe
A black-dial Big Pilot can accompany formal travel and relaxed yachting days without being marketed as specialist diving or marine safety equipment. The interest is in design and horology, not a claimed role in bridge operations.
