Outer Reef Yacht Group has introduced the 540 Adventure Sport, a 56ft 5in (approximately 17.2m) cruiser that brings high-power outboard propulsion into the builder's long-range Adventure Series. The model is aimed at owners who want serious cruising capability without giving up the easier access to water toys, diving and day use associated with sportier yachts.
The yacht shares its core platform with the 540 Adventure but replaces conventional inboard propulsion with four 500hp Mercury V12 outboards. Outer Reef says the result preserves ocean-going capability while creating a different operating and lifestyle proposition at the stern.
Quad V12 outboards change the aft layout
Moving propulsion outside the hull releases machinery space and simplifies access to major powertrain components. On the 540 Adventure Sport, that space is used to support storage and watersports functions rather than being dominated by a conventional engine room.
The quad-outboard configuration also gives the yacht substantial manoeuvring authority and performance potential. Owners still need to account for fuel consumption and service access, but the arrangement reflects the continued movement of large outboards into yachts well above traditional day-boat sizes.
Long-range cruising remains part of the brief
Outer Reef quotes a range of up to 2,000 nautical miles at economical speed and gives the yacht CE Category A – Unlimited Ocean certification. Those figures position the 540 Adventure Sport differently from many outboard yachts of similar length, which are usually designed primarily for coastal use.
Range will depend on speed, load, weather and sea state, but the design intent is clear: the yacht is meant to support longer passages as well as active weekend use. That combination is unusual in the 17-metre outboard segment.
Outdoor living is central to the Sport version
The model adds equipment and deck arrangements aimed at diving, fishing, paddle sports and tender use. A large aft platform, substantial storage and open social areas are intended to make it easier to move between cruising and watersports without a major change of setup.
For families and owner-operators, that flexibility can matter more than outright top speed. The yacht is designed around being used throughout the day rather than treating outdoor equipment as an occasional extra.
A different route into expedition-style ownership
The 540 Adventure Sport shows how builders are blending categories that were previously more distinct. Explorer-style range, premium accommodation and large-outboard propulsion now appear together in a yacht that remains comfortably below 24 metres.
For LYG buyers, the important point is not simply the four engines. It is the attempt to combine long-distance capability with a much more active, water-focused ownership style in a manageable owner-operated package.
