Dallas gains a new recreational boat exhibition
The National Marine Manufacturers Association has announced the Discover Boating DTX Boat Show, a new event due to take place from 18 to 21 March 2027 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas. The announcement was issued on 14 October 2026 and adds another exhibition to the association's industry-owned show portfolio. The dates describe a future first edition, not an event already held. For families comparing boats, a well-organised show can bring different brands into one visit, making it easier to ask questions about cost, storage and servicing. That comparison should include the boat’s intended waters and the experience of its future operator, rather than focusing solely on the appearance of the exhibits. A sales presentation is not a substitute for a properly arranged sea trial.
The initiative is intended to connect boatbuilders, dealers, service firms and potential customers in North Texas. Organisers plan an exhibition where visitors can compare boats and equipment while learning about ownership and activities on the water. The precise exhibitor list is still being developed, so buyers should not assume that every major manufacturer will participate.
Why North Texas matters for boating
The NMMA identifies Texas as the third-largest American state for boating expenditures, with more than 625,000 registered boats. It attributes over 11.8 billion US dollars in annual economic impact and more than 38,000 supported jobs to the state's recreational marine sector. Within Dallas-Fort Worth, it estimates approximately 179,000 registered boats and 1.9 billion dollars in economic activity.
These figures explain the organisation's interest in developing a substantial new exhibition close to the metropolitan area. They are NMMA industry estimates rather than sales figures for the proposed DTX event. The Dallas-Fort Worth area includes a large population of boat owners who cruise lakes and inland waters, making dealer access and education particularly relevant.
A large convention-centre commitment
The NMMA has secured a lease for 300,000 square feet of space at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center through 2029. Its plans set the first show for March 2027, followed by dates of 16 to 19 March 2028 and 1 to 4 March 2029. The agreement demonstrates a multi-year intention to establish a recurring fixture rather than a single trial weekend.
The convention centre itself is scheduled for major expansion and renovation expected to be completed in 2030. That wider infrastructure programme is separate from the inaugural boat show and does not establish any specific new hall or exhibit layout for March 2027. Visitors should consult final event information for floor plans, transport access and admission arrangements.
Dealer participation is already developing
The association says exhibition-space sales have begun and several local dealers have committed to participating. MarineMax Dallas and its Pier121 Marina yacht centre have publicly supported the project, alongside OneWater Marine and Waterview Marinas. Their involvement offers a link between the exhibition and businesses responsible for selling and maintaining boats in the region.
A dealer's expression of support is not a guarantee that a particular model will be displayed. Boat inventories, transport requirements and product launch schedules can change over the months before an exhibition. Prospective buyers hoping to inspect one design should confirm its attendance with the dealer, rather than rely only on a list of corporate supporters.
Education and hands-on experiences planned
Discover Boating shows are designed to introduce new participants to recreation on the water while helping established owners consider upgrades. The DTX programme is intended to include educational sessions, experiential attractions and promotions alongside boat displays. Organisers also plan to highlight marine technology, making the event more than a static collection of vessels.
Detailed seminar schedules and practical demonstrations have not yet been published in the October announcement. Visitors should therefore regard those features as planned elements awaiting specific confirmation. An effective introduction to boat ownership should cover not only exciting equipment but also safety, storage, insurance, local regulations and the ongoing costs of maintenance.
A connection with Discover Boating
The National Marine Manufacturers Association operates the Discover Boating platform with industry partners, using consumer education and marketing to encourage participation in boating. Bringing that name to Dallas allows organisers to draw on an established national audience while working with local dealers and marinas. The event is part of a broader programme of NMMA-managed boat shows around the United States.
This affiliation may be useful to people buying their first boat, since a national information programme can complement the advice supplied at a dealer stand. However, no trade show replaces the need to check the specifications and capacity limits of the actual vessel. Prospective owners should also seek competent instruction before operating unfamiliar equipment.
Leadership for the inaugural event
Darren Envall, the NMMA's vice-president for Midwest and Midsouth boat and sport shows, will manage the first edition. Association president Frank Hugelmeyer described North Texas as an important boating market that has not always received an exhibition reflecting its scale. The strategy is to build an annual showcase for regional buyers and the marine industry.
Organising a new event involves balancing dealer requirements with the expectations of visitors who are simply exploring boating. Demand for smaller family craft, sports boats and larger cruising vessels can differ across a metropolitan market. The NMMA has not released attendance targets or final financial projections for the inaugural year, so any estimate of success must wait until after the show.
What owners should check before March 2027
The Discover Boating DTX Boat Show is scheduled for 18–21 March 2027 in downtown Dallas, with subsequent annual editions already planned. For visitors, its value will depend on the confirmed exhibitors, educational content and opportunities to discuss ownership with local businesses. For dealers, the show provides a new marketplace at the start of the spring boating season.

Visitors and potential exhibitors should consult the official show organisation for current information about admissions, available space and any later changes to the programme.
