The drive to a yacht can be part of the escape, whether it is a short visit to the marina or a long journey to a different cruising coast. Volvo's revised XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids offer substantially more electric driving while retaining petrol power for the sections between charging opportunities.
Announced on 15 September, the new long-range versions quote up to 200km for the XC60 and 160km for the XC90 on their applicable test basis. Those are manufacturer figures rather than a promise for a fully laden car travelling to a summer berth.
A longer electric first leg
Volvo attributes the improvement to a larger floor-integrated battery and stronger electric motor, giving owners more scope to cover daily journeys without starting the combustion engine. The company says the new electric range is more than two and a half times that of the existing plug-in hybrid variants.
That could change the rhythm of a yacht weekend, particularly when errands, shopping and marina transfers take place near the property where the car can be charged. Actual range will reflect the chosen model, temperature, speed and load.
Two sizes for different travelling crews
The XC60 receives updated front and rear styling alongside the longer-range drivetrain, while the XC90 remains the more spacious family alternative. Luggage for a cruise, children's bags and shore-side supplies make practical load space as relevant as propulsion figures.
Neither model's published range determines towing suitability for an individual yacht tender. Buyers should check the approved tow rating, trailer weight and local licence rules separately.
The route from home to the harbour
The appeal lies in using the electric part of the journey where practical while retaining the ability to continue beyond a charging network. Owners should compare charging access at home and at their regular destination rather than assume every marina provides a dedicated car-charging bay.
