A half-century of a recognisable design
For the 12.00–23.99-metre luxury-yacht market, this development has a specific place in the wider marine and travel picture. IWC Schaffhausen has marked the 50th anniversary of Gérald Genta's Ingenieur SL with two limited-edition watches. Released on 15 September 2026, the anniversary pieces revisit a comparatively rare brushed silver-dial variation of the 1976 reference 1832 rather than simply reproducing the better-known textured dial.
The historical original was conceived when steel sports watches with integrated bracelets were establishing a new place in Swiss watchmaking. IWC says only 598 examples of the Ingenieur SL were made between 1976 and 1983, a modest production history that later gained collector attention.
A choice of two case sizes
The Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary, reference IW328910, and the Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary, reference IW324909, are each limited to 1,150 pieces. Both use stainless-steel cases and integrated bracelets with a brushed silver-plated dial, rhodium-plated hands and hour markers with luminous filling.
The anniversary detail is restrained: the number 50 replaces the lightning bolt beneath the Ingenieur name. IWC has retained the five functional bezel screws and the sculptural combination of brushed and polished surfaces.
Different movements beneath the dial
The 40mm model uses IWC's manufacture calibre 32111, whose double-pawl automatic winding system provides a stated 120-hour power reserve. Like the original SL, it has a soft-iron inner case intended to protect its movement against magnetic fields.
The smaller 35mm edition has a sapphire display back showing calibre 47110, with decorative finishing and a gold-plated oscillating weight. Those mechanical choices make the versions more than a simple difference in diameter.
The relationship to Genta's legacy
Alexia Genta, daughter of the designer, has welcomed the continuation of his work within the modern collection launched in 2023. The anniversary underscores the way a design initially met with limited commercial success can become the reference point for a contemporary range.
