Kandooma begins life under its own name

Kandooma Maldives has begun a new chapter as an independently branded, all-inclusive island resort under HPL Hotels & Resorts management. The change took effect on 1 October 2026 after seventeen years as Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives. Rather than announcing a new island development, the company is updating an established destination in South Malé Atoll, retaining its staff and familiar surroundings while changing the accommodation mix and holiday package.

The resort's appeal remains closely connected to its location, with beaches, reef excursions and watersports shaping much of a visit. The new name is accompanied by a broader set of included experiences and larger family accommodation. Travellers who knew the earlier Holiday Inn property should therefore distinguish what has changed from the island's existing attractions, rather than assume it has moved or been rebuilt.

An island reached by speedboat

Kandooma sits around thirty-five kilometres south of Velana International Airport in South Malé Atoll. The resort describes an airport transfer of approximately forty-five minutes by speedboat, avoiding the need for a domestic flight or seaplane. Actual travel time can depend on sea conditions and transfer arrangements, so visitors arriving on international flights should confirm how their connections are handled.

The property has 146 villas across garden, beachfront and overwater locations. These settings offer quite different holiday rhythms, from stepping onto the sand to sitting above the lagoon. Families may value the proximity of a particular villa to restaurants or supervised activities, while couples may prefer a quieter position. The new branding does not mean that every category has a private pool or identical direct access to the water.

Private pools and larger family villas

Eight new Family Beach Pool Villas have been introduced with beach access, private splash pools and dedicated sleeping spaces for children. The resort has also added pools to its two-bedroom Beach Houses and announced two larger three-bedroom Pool Villas. These changes aim to make extended-family holidays easier to organise without requiring guests to book several completely separate villas.

The published accommodation programme includes both indoor and outdoor living areas, but the exact capacity varies by category. Some of the three-bedroom villas are designed to accommodate larger groups, while smaller beach and garden rooms remain options for couples. Guests should compare room plans, sleeping arrangements and pool safety provisions before reserving, particularly when travelling with several children of different ages.

All-inclusive beyond food and drink

The refreshed offer is intended to cover more than daily meals. For qualifying stays of at least four nights, Kandooma lists a sunset splash cruise, sunrise fishing, guided reef snorkelling and a choice of thirty-minute spa treatments among the included experiences. Longer visits may provide repeated benefits, with selected inclusions refreshing after every four nights under the operator's rules.

That structure differs from assuming every excursion is unlimited or included on any booking. Guests need to check eligibility, advance reservations and any conditions tied to their stay. The resort's announcement is a statement of the new package concept, not a guarantee that all water activities will be available regardless of weather, staffing or environmental restrictions on the day.

Diving and ocean experiences

The Kandooma Blue programme draws together diving, reef snorkelling, boat excursions and fishing. The island's PADI Five Star Dive Centre says it provides access to around twenty-eight nearby sites, making underwater exploration a significant part of the proposition. Certified divers staying four nights or longer can access one guided dive each day through the Dive Free programme, subject to the applicable terms.

The resort says those dives include standard equipment, boat transfers and air or Nitrox fills. Certification, experience and local conditions still determine which sites are suitable, and a particular dive may not proceed in poor weather. Children aged eight and above can be introduced to underwater breathing through a PADI Bubblemaker experience, while surf lessons are offered in conjunction with the resort's specialist surfing partner.

Food, wellbeing and evening gatherings

Kandooma Table covers dining and social food experiences, including beach barbecues, themed island evenings and informal meals. Kandooma Café now operates twenty-four hours a day, giving families more flexibility around early excursions and late arrivals. The operator also describes a Beach Club conceived as a daytime gathering place that continues into the evening, but its launch release said completion would follow in subsequent weeks.

Kandooma Flow provides a quieter counterpart to the water-based programme through the spa, yoga, Pilates and relaxation activities. One thirty-minute back, neck and shoulder massage or foot massage is included for a qualifying four-night stay. Kandooma Social adds music, group events and campfire evenings. Travellers seeking particular dining venues or activities should check current operating arrangements, rather than treat planned facilities as automatically open.

Learning about the Maldives with children

The Kandooma Ways programme offers a closer look at island life through cultural encounters, visits, walks, sustainability activities and opportunities to learn about the surrounding environment. It provides a reason to look beyond the ocean views and consider how local communities and conservation programmes fit into a stay. Guests should ask which experiences are led by local specialists and which are covered by their package.

Families remain central to the resort's identity. The Kids Stay and Eat Free offer continues, while Kandoo Kids' Club welcomes children aged four to twelve from eight in the morning until eight in the evening. Supervised arts, crafts, games and a splash area are among its activities. Parents should confirm age rules, supervision arrangements and availability, especially where specialist excursions require separate safety briefings.

What the rebrand means for a visit

HPL Hotels & Resorts now manages the property, and general manager Andrew Drummond describes the change as a way to make the island's outdoor and family experiences part of the holiday itself. The new identity is therefore less about a different location than a wider package and additional accommodation options. The company's October statement stresses continuity of staff and the island atmosphere alongside its investment.

For anyone comparing Maldives resorts, the important questions are which villa category suits the group, how the four-night inclusions apply and whether planned facilities are fully operating on their travel dates. Kandooma offers an established island setting with a more ambitious all-inclusive programme, but reservations still need to match real interests and needs. Its current official website provides the latest accommodation and experience details.
